Deschutes County Health Services, St. Charles Health System and Bend-La Pine Schools will host free, walk-in community support events Friday, Oct. 16, following the tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary.

Support, community connection and crisis coping tools will be available.

We recognize that events like this can impact our entire community, and we want to remind you that you are not alone.

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) offers mental health counseling appointments for patients who may need additional support during this difficult time, subject to appointment availability.

If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call VIM during our staffed phone hours. We will have extra phone hours tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will resume our normal phone hours next week.

For immediate emotional support, call or text 988, available 24/7. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.

Meet Your New Office Fundraiser!

Your breakroom can do more than recycle. Together, your team can make a big difference!

VIM provides Blue Bags and program stickers to get your business started. Place a bag in a shared space and invite your team to fill it with eligible redeemable cans and bottles.

When the bag is full, return it to the VIM clinic or take it to a BottleDrop center in Bend or Redmond. All proceeds go directly toward supporting VIM’s mission to provide healthcare to uninsured working people in Central Oregon.

It’s an easy way to turn everyday recycling into meaningful community impact! 💚

We are deeply saddened by the passing of James “Jim” Petersen, a truly remarkable person whose life was defined by service to others.

Jim was a founder of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of the Cascades and served as our Board Chair. After traveling to Hilton Head, South Carolina, with Jim Lussier and Dr. Stan Shepardson to learn about the Volunteers in Medicine model, Jim helped bring that vision home to Central Oregon. What began with a bold idea became a lasting community of care that continues to change lives today.

Jim dedicated his life to serving others. Through his leadership, mentorship, faith, community service, and generosity, he left an extraordinary mark on Central Oregon.

We will miss Jim deeply and are forever grateful for his vision, his leadership, and the lasting legacy of compassion and service he helped create at VIM.

More than 500 people came together at this year’s Health & Wellness Fair, Central Oregon’s largest Latino-focused health and wellness fair. The event brings families together to connect with free health services, screenings, and community resources, with information and activities offered primarily in Spanish.

We loved being part of a day where families could find helpful resources, connect with local organizations, enjoy some food and fun, and celebrate their health together.

Healthcare changes affect all of us!

Last week, VIM Cascades Executive Director Kat Mastrangelo moderated City Club of Central Oregon’s conversation on how Medicaid changes will impact Central Oregon.

With hundreds of thousands of Oregonians affected, the ripple effects will reach our healthcare system, providers, employers, and communities.

Volunteers in Medicine provides healthcare to eligible adults in Central Oregon who do not have health insurance and have limited access to affordable care.

☀️ Central Oregon is heating up this week! As temperatures rise, taking a few simple precautions can help prevent heat-related illness.

Here are a few ways to stay safe:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
🧢 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat when outdoors.
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
👵 Check in on older adults, neighbors, and loved ones who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

If you begin experiencing dizziness, nausea, confusion, or excessive fatigue, move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and take care of one another this week! 💙
