I took this on a walk in the park with my mom a few weeks ago. A garden surrounds her wherever she goes, I thought. The more I’ve stared at this image, I realized it’s symbolic of the last 25 years of remembrance following the tragedy that took my father. The growth coming up from the bare rock and the love that still remains.

I was 1 when 9/11 happened. I only know my father through shared memories and photos, but I feel more connected to him now than ever- I’m older than my parents were when they met in 1989. I now know what it means be an adult and a man, and I understand why he sacrificed his life that day. I’m extremely proud to be his son. And I’m proud that it’s etched in history and truly never forgotten. Not a day goes by when I don’t hear 9/11 referenced in some way, so not a day goes by that I’m not also reminded of the strength and perseverance of my mother.

She who became a single mother of two toddlers at 34. Through her grief, she raised my brother and I alone, showered us with love, and taught us to be brave, respectful, and kind. She taught us who our father was. The tremendous pride I feel to be her son on this and every day is something I can only allude to. I love you, mom.

My love also goes out to the rest of the FDNY firefighters that scarified their lives, their families, and all of the other victims and their families, too. I also cannot help but think of the countless and senseless loss of life in the wars and military campaigns that followed in response to 9/11. So many innocent lives stolen. Peace and love is not cliche, it’s the only answer.
