Day 18 - Boreal Owl #owltober

I’m back to posting my owls after a couple of days of moving/getting settled into our new living space. One thing I’m really enjoying about this challenge is the reality that I won’t have time to complete a finished illustration every day means I’m focusing on sketches more. I’m personally guilty of rushing this part to get to the inking and coloring. I don’t know about you all but I already feel my bird drawing skills will be stronger by the end of this challenge. by @vincentrose_art

I know, they’re not owls but - twice in the last week I’ve been stopped in my tracks by the distant calls of Sandhill Cranes passing overhead. This weekend I was sitting inside my RV drawing an owl when I heard another camper not far from us shout “what’s that!?”. Then I heard it, the ancient chorus of cranes. I grabbed my binos and dashed outside, immediately spotting several hundred of them circling thousands of feet overhead, directly over our site. I stood and watched them a while, and then heard that other camper again, closer this time ask me “what are they!?”. I let her borrow my binoculars and got to share what I know about them with a brand new birder. She was so grateful that I shared and she got to learn about a bird she never even knew existed. They stayed for a long time in our area, I estimated about three hundred of them. I hadn’t heard them since my wife and I went down to Monte Vista this past spring to see them at the wildlife refuge there. There is just something so magical about them. by @vincentrose_art

OWLTOBER DAY 8: Mottled Wood Owl 🦉🌙

After I chose the Mexican Wood Owl for day 8, i looked into wood owls more and realized that the species I chose was a subspecies of the Mottled Owl. Which is different than the Mottle Wood Owl. Nonetheless, I ended up finding this beautiful Mottled Wood Owl native to India really beautiful and interesting. Their inky black eyes and striking barring on their chest were particularly stunning to me, and the fact that they are known to roost and nest on the outskirts of deciduous forests and gardens. Particularly in mango and tamarind trees (to name a few). In some parts of India, these owls and their spooky calls are believed to be a bad omen, but I can’t help but find them cute.

I can’t wait to see what wood owl you chose for todays prompt, whether it be the Mexican wood owl or someone else. Tag #owltober by @vincentrose_art

OWLTOBER day four / stygian owl

while i was putting together the prompts for this #owltober drawing challenge, i made a point to include owls i had never heard of or seen before, and came across these beautiful owls on ebird.

The Stygian Owl, native to Mexico, the Caribbean and South America is named for its dark plumage (Stygian as in the River Styx of the Greek underworld). Because of their appearance and eyes that reflect red in some light, they have been associated with witchcraft. The stygian owl goes by many names depending where you are, but I found it interesting that in Cuba, he is known as Siguapa. Ciguapa -spelled with a C - is the name of a mythical creature in the Dominican Republic. I can’t help but wonder whether that’s where the owl gets its name, or the other way around. If you know more please share in the comments!

Whatever you like to call it,this owl became an instant favorite for me. (It’s also the owl I chose for the prompt list flyer!) There doesn’t seem to be much information on them compared to most of the owls on this list, which only adds to their mystery. I like to think they prefer to remain unknown. 🦉 by @vincentrose_art

OWLTOBER - Day Three/The Moon

The idea behind including some prompts that were not specific owl species was to give ourselves some days to just play and be creative, instead of focusing on getting a certain owl right. I had a lot of fun with this idea and would love to come back to it when I have more than twenty four hours before the next prompt.

I hope you all have fun coming up with your own ways to illustrate the relationship between owls and our friend the Moon. 🌙

Don’t forget to tag me and #owltober in your drawings (painted rocks, videos, poems, etc) so I can share them! by @vincentrose_art

OWLTOBER day two - the Great Gray Owl

I had a lot of fun reading about and drawing this gorgeous, giant owl of the north. Though their bodies are pretty small and lightweight, their fluffy feathers make them the largest of the owls. They rely mostly on mature boreal forest to hunt and nest, and are threatened directly by logging and deforestation as they need old mature trees with hollows big enough for them to nest in.
They also have the largest facial disk of any owl and amazingly good hearing, good enough to track a vole burrowing underneath two feet of snow.
Though globally listed as a species of least concern, they are listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act.

I’ve never been lucky enough to see them or even visit their range but after reading about them, I am kinda obsessed and dreaming up a trip north to try and catch a glimpse of one of these majestic boreal apex predators.

I am excited to see how y’all honor the Great Gray Owl today with your own artwork. Day one of #owltober was awesome, thank you all for participating! by @vincentrose_art
