‘Since it appears to have been the custom in Egyptian theology to represent divine figures in a male-female duality we find the goddess Neith as the counterpart of Ammon.’ This text is by Lauweriks from his Egypt lecture in 1895. Interpretations about Egyptian gods are different today. But it’s remarkable how he spoke freely of intersex gods. Intersex was more common in Ancient Egypt. This statue of Neith is at the Louvre. ..#worldpride #intersex #prideamsterdam #egyptgods worldpride2026In nowadays Egypt intersex is not recognized and forbidden like homosexuality. As WorldPride is in Amsterdam at the moment we have ‘Zero Flags Project’. An impressie row of country flags of countries where LGBTQIA+ is forbidden. In some of them death penalty still exists. You can read it all on the board. ..#worldpride #intersex #prideamsterdam #worldpride2026In contrast to Ancient Egypt LGBTQIA+ is forbidden in ‘Modern’ Egypt. Therefore its flag is at the Zero Flag Project at Museumplein during WorldPride 2026 in Amsterdam. See my other two photos and texts and check the WorldPride program. ..#worldpride #prideamsterdam #worldpride2026 #egyptianflag by @vincentvanossart

Much to say about the pyramid and Amsterdam School. Lauweriks referred to it because of its proportions. In that way the triangle is the essence. There where Pierre Cuypers based the triangle for his designs on the Middle Ages, Lauweriks based it on Theosophy and the pyramid. There are Egyptian triangles based on 3: 4: 5 and others based on the golden ratio way before Fibonacci discovered it. In outward appearance the triangles are more or less the same. ..#pyramid #modernekunst #triangles #pyramide #amsterdamseschool by @vincentvanossart

My play with the Swan by Lauweriks results in a pattern where motif and background interlock. It reminds me of a design by him for a drinkcup. (Photo 2). As we are in Pride Month and I study Lauweriks and Egypt, I show you two guys long time considered the first gay couple in the world: Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum. In Ancient Egypt same sex relations and intersexe were much more accepted than they are in ‘Modern Egypt’. I’ll write more about it during WorldPride2026 in Amsterdam coming Summer. Inclusivity worldwide has to be fought for every day. .#🏳‍🌈 #🏳️‍🌈 #modernekunst #worldpride #prideamsterdam by @vincentvanossart

My assemblage from this year shows ‘The threatened swan’ by Asselijn in combination with people worshipping a swan by Lauweriks. The second photo shows the whole woodcut by him including ‘his’ swan. The one by Lauweriks is crowned, ‘a spiritual sign of transformation and becoming’, I read. This goes well with Lauweriks’ theosophical ideas. We are in pride month. Next to the pink flamengo and the peacock the lgbtqia+ community also adopted the swan. A short view on the internet tells a young swan, cygnet, is derived from King Cygnus who had a male lover. Thanks Jason.d.Rothwell for your post on February 4th. Lgbtqia.wiki refers to a swan as a non-binary person. Orion magazine writes: ‘Gay is the thing with feathers.’ On the third photo: Visage singer Steve Strange. #swan #🏳‍🌈 #modernekunst #lgbtqiaplus #prideamsterdam by @vincentvanossart

The origin of the caduceus (the scepter with two snakes) perhaps comes from Mesopotamy, 2100 BC. It’s shown on a libation vase of Gudea. Collection Louvre Museum. Britannica however writes about a stick with garments, later interpreted as two snakes. What version do you believe? The upper part of the caduceus has two wings and a knob, it symbolizes a personal or non personal god. Sometimes the knob is shaped into a monster or a third snake head. Sometimes the upper part represents a swan. The swan is also symbol of the Lutherian Church. At the Luther Museum in Amsterdam I made a collage together with staff member Gerard Saurwalt and a volunteer. I used the head of ‘The threatened swan’ by Asselijn (Collection Rijksmuseum) to change the caduceus by Lauweriks. ( Photo 1 ,2).Photo 3 shows Gerard, photo 4 his work in the middle and the volunteer’s work on the left. #modernart #modernekunst #luther #caduceus #lutheranism by @vincentvanossart

The caduceus is a symbol staff already supposed to be known in ancient Egyptian times. Later the scepter was being carried by Hermes and Mercury. Marty Bax refers to it as symbolizing Kundalini on page 380 in ‘Het web der schepping’. A Black snake is descending from spirit to matter and a white snake is ascending from matter to spirit. The first photo shows the caduceus, a detail from the woodcut by Lauweriks called ‘Egypte’ from 1895; collection Rijksmuseum. (Second photo). Remarkably this caduceus is similar to the one used to imagine the scepter carried by Hermes. As it is from another place and time I would expect another image. The third photo for instance shows a caduceus carried by Thoth. You see two sticks and two snakes. Perhaps it’s the Egyptian way of showing one stick with two different snakes. ...#modernart #modernekunst #thoth #caduceus #lauweriks by @vincentvanossart

Two kings entering into an agreement can cause the whole world to suffer. Turning 30 Mathieu Lauweriks was still searching for his own identity, independent of his Catholic background. This manifested itself in an interest in esotericism, but also through an anarchist attitude. ‘Chrouching figure and two crowned men’ by Lauweriks, woodcut print, 1894, collection Rijksmuseum. ...#modernekunst #woodcut #woodcutprint #mathieulauweriks by @vincentvanossart

Both Buddhist and Hinduist ideas were followed in the Theosophical Society. Though Theosophists meditate a lot you can’t say Lauweriks or Mondriaan were either Buddhist or Hinduist. The aim is to get on a higher level. I always feel stairs are also the symbol of reaching higher. ‘Stairway to..?’ is an exhibition about stairs at Kunsthal Kade. At least two great articles are written about it. One by Lucette ter Borg and one by Kees Keijer. Buddha Head on a snack plate, 2020. ...#modernekunst #hedendaagsekunst #buddhaart #theosophy #stairwayto by @vincentvanossart

As Lauweriks did a lot of meditations, the lotus position must have been familiar to him. This Buddha drawing is shown at the back of the book ‘J. L. Mathieu Lauweriks’ by Nic. Tummers. The drawing shows a way of making the Buddha figure. Watch the big triangles in the torso and legs (one upwards, one downwards) and the triangles in the face. They show the construction. Tonight Danh Vo at Stedelijk Museum. ...#buddha #modernekunst #buddhaart #buddhaartwork #lauweriks by @vincentvanossart
