Here's an excerpt:

Our cooling system in the summer was the steep mountainous terrain of Eastern Kentucky, our open windows and front door. Cool air from the valley wafted and billowed up our mountainside. We’d open the windows only after turning off the light in a failed attempt not to attract June bugs. They flew in anyway, their flight paths unencumbered by our screenless windows. The wop wop of their helicopter rotor wings had me screaming and ducking even before the airborne flight machines cruised above our heads. Tom would laugh, pull the covers over our heads, and pull me close. I’d fall asleep to the wop wop and the firmness and warmth of his body.

Here's another excerpt from Theresa Huttlinger Vigour's new memoir Heartstopping, to warm you up:

Leaving our bed in the winter mornings, our rented bed that sagged in the middle, honeymoon style, our bed with an electric blanket was a shock I never got over. During the night, as the coal stove cooled, frost billowed, icing the walls of our rented cabin, our four rooms and a path to the outhouse. No matter how Tom banked the coals at night, the potbellied stove was cold in the morning. The brand name of that coal stove was Warm Morning. It was named by someone, I’m sure, who had never lived with a coal stove, or never lived with one in a house with no insulation. I’d put my socks, shirt, pants or skirt or dress in bed with me so that they would not be stiff with frost when I put them on. After Tom started the fire in the stove, we’d put our boots in front to warm them before we put them on. I’d wear my boots to traverse the frozen ground and descend the quarter mile downhill to where my car and Tom’s truck were parked. Our road, Grapevine Creek, was at the bottom, in the “holler” or valley and wound its way into Hazard, where I worked at the newspaper. For every step down the hill and for all the miles I drove into town, I was grateful for warm boots, for warm feet, for Tom who got the fire going.

If you're near Winona, Mississippi tonight, why don't you pop in at the Winona-Montgomery County Library to meet author Theresa Huttlinger-Vigour and get a signed copy of her new memoir Heartstopping?

Here's an excerpt:

Tom wasn’t there, and because he wasn’t, I was looking for companionship, so I asked the shirtless grinner benign, get-to-know-you questions like, “So you have a cat?” and “How long have you lived alone?” and “Read any good books lately?” He responded with one-word answers and then said, “I’d like to do you.” I suspect that Lance got what he was after when he heard me gasp, an inhalation that revealed I had forgotten everything I knew about dating forty years ago. I pushed the power button on my computer.
Years later, I would call my friend T in tears after another internet dater’s phone call frightened me. T, a veteran of dating sites and always the comforter, said, “It’s a smorgasbord out there.” How I came to be on a dating website smorgasbord, and how I ended up meeting a man with no shirt on, is a story that had its beginnings decades earlier.

My first and only online chat with a man I met on a dating website occurred in the early weeks of my internet dating experiences. In his profile on Match.com, Lance said he was a medical researcher with a master’s degree in biology and a lover of good books. I checked out the hospital he said he worked for and, yes, there was an employee named Lance at that hospital who had a master’s degree in biology, so, armed with that validation, if not a character reference, I sent him a message. He responded with the suggestion that we “meet” on a Yahoo face-to-face chat site. When I agreed, he wanted to meet right away. It was early in the day and I was still in my pajamas, so I said maybe later. He said I could turn off my camera, so that we could both hear each other, and he couldn’t see me, but I could see him. I agreed. When the Yahoo chatsite opened up, he was behind his laptop. I can’t remember his face because all I saw was his bare chest and shoulders.
I was so surprised at this first glance of him that I said, “You don’t have a shirt on.” His grin should have told me to turn off my computer, but naivete left me ill-equipped to retort in kind, so I said, “Well, just don’t stand up.”

“Theresa Vigour’s Heartstopping is a poignant, thought-provoking, and occasionally hilarious memoir of bereavement and its aftermath. A soul-searching and expressive narrative of grief and coping.”
— Carolyn Korsmeyer, author of Riddle of Spirit and Bone and Atomic City: Reflections on a Childhood out of Place

“‘Yes, a rumor. It can’t be true.’ But Martha’s gut feeling told her otherwise. Foreigners had been kidnapped in Gaza back in August. They had all been released, unharmed. But what if this time it was different? What if this time they threatened to kill Henry?
