We recently visited the forests of Kathalekan, and it was a very interesting experience to walk through one of the Western Ghats’ unique habitats.

One of the highlights was seeing the Myristica swamps, rare freshwater swamp forests that support highly specialized biodiversity. These ecosystems are considered relic habitats and are an important part of the region’s ecological history.

The forest floor was full of amphibian life, including endemic species like the Jog Night Frog, which is found only in a few parts of the Western Ghats. Observing these frogs in their natural habitat was fascinating.

We also came across several endemic tree species that are characteristic of these evergreen forests and swamp ecosystems.

Walking through the forest itself was quite striking. The dense canopy keeps the forest relatively dark even during the day, and the quiet is broken mainly by occasional bird and frog calls. Almost every step revealed insects, amphibians, or reptiles moving through the leaf litter.

Thanks to @girish_janney and @sathvik_talavata for showing us around and sharing their knowledge and passion for these forests. Their work highlights why conserving habitats like Kathalekan, and the species that depend on them, is so important.

This looks like paradise. But beneath this calm lies a different story.

The Sharavathi hydropower project has already submerged hundreds of acres of forests in the Western Ghats and displaced thousands of local residents. What appears pristine today stands on land that once held thriving ecosystems and communities.

Now, another project by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited is being planned despite widespread opposition from local communities and environmental activists - one that threatens the fragile local ecosystem yet again, including the habitat of the endangered Lion-Tailed Macaques.

Power keeps our homes lit, our devices charged, our lives uninterrupted. It is a privilege many of us rarely pause to think about.

Power comes at a cost. Use power wisely.

When you think you have the bird’s eye view and then a kite appears

Living in a big apartment complex can feel dull and full of concrete, but there’s always something to notice if we look around - birds, trees, and small bits of nature holding on.
Most evenings I find myself standing by the window, watching the sunset and the changing colours of the sky. Bangalore’s evening skies never disappoint. On this day, I saw a kite catching thermals and slowly gaining altitude. I waited and watched until, for a few fleeting seconds it was right at my eye level. I managed to capture that moment - the kite soaring freely over a city that has changed a lot, but still has spaces where birds, insects, and animals live alongside us.

In an ancient Shiva temple in Hiremane, a small village nestled within the vast expanse of the western ghats, a crowd had gathered in peak monsoon. First was oota (lunch) followed by a koota (gathering ) to watch Talamaddale (an offshoot of Yakshagaana), that was being performed by Sri Bhuvaneshwari Talamaddale Koota. A koota involves enacting a prasanga ( an episode) usually from the epic Mahabharata, with odike (reading) accompanied by instruments (taala) a cymbal, maddale (drums) and a singer.
Somewhere in the hinterlands of coastal and malnad regions of Karnataka, ancient art forms like these lives, breathes and thrives - all thanks to a few passionate musicians passing it on from one generation to another and an equally passionate audience.

This handsome bull belongs to a native breed called Ongole from Andhra Pradesh. Many such indigenous breeds have been dwindling in India due to a massive shift in agricultural practices where tractors are used for tilling instead of bulls.

Accompanying the Ongole bull were these musicians, one playing the Nadaswaram and the other playing the thavil, played only by a handful of communities in southern India.
