Before the first sip, there is a mountain, a village, and a person who knows every tree. I followed my tea to Laobanzhang — a place celebrated as the “king of pu-erh” — and into the gardens with He Sen. This is what getting closer to the source looks like.

He Sen (和森), also known as Li Kaihua (李开华), welcomed me at No. 21. The former village chief made time in his busy days to guide me through the tea gardens, arrange my meals and accommodation, and make sure I was cared for. The tea brought me here. His kindness stays with me.
