From My Walk With Vinu Mash, 17-01-2026

(This evening, Vinu Mash and I surrendered the diagonal impatience of the map for the longest possible stories. We wandered through the electric echoes of the Kalolsavam, past orphaned books and dusty stadiums, only to find the sun waiting for us on an iron bridge.

Vinu Mash - my dear friend, brother and a teacher of photography - stands here as the silhouette of a moment that refused to be ordinary. To me, he is always Chettan, but in the lines of this poem, he remains the 'Vinu Mash' of our shared journey. These are the fragments of our walk, embedded in poetry.)

Thrissur today was a giant, colourful lung-
breathing the Kalolsavam into the heavy streets.
But Vinu Mash and I - we were the dust motes
floating outside the rhythm of that breath.

We began at Kappiclub in Pazhayanadakkavu,
where the tea is a dark, swirling galaxy
and the pazhampori is a slice of the sun, fried in oil.
A child knows that you don’t eat a snack to be full,
you eat it to make the moment stay.

Then came the 'Great Deviation'.
We ignored the diagonal greed of the map,
trading the shortest route for the longest story.
We paused at the roadside thrift stall by the Public Library,
fingering the spines of old, unbought books-
orphaned tales waiting for owners who were in a hurry.
We touched the paper and left our own unsaid words there.

We passed the Kalolsavam stages -
Thekkinkad, Town Hall, the stadium.
The speakers were shouting at empty chairs,
their voices heavy with songs but no one to hear them.
It felt like the city was talking to itself-
the whirring ghosts of music playing to rows of nobody.
I wondered, how can a place be so loud
yet look so lonely at the same time?

The stadium was a bowl of rising dust,
so we climbed toward the sky instead.
On the overbridge, I saw the sun trying to squeeze
through the iron ribs of the walkway-
a gold coin dropped by a giant on his way to the dance.
"Stand there, Vinu Mash. Act like you aren't waiting for the world."
I clicked the shutter, trapping him and the coin together.
If I collect enough of these, can I buy back this hour?

The Goat Mother: Vesu's Family of Goats

This photo story shows the life of Vesu, a 54-year-old woman from Vadakanchery, Palakkad, who lives with her goats as her only family.

After her mother passed away, Vesu found comfort in her mother’s goats. They are not just animals to her but like her own children.

Vesu lives in an old, broken house. She takes care of her goats with love and keeps them safe. During the rainy season, she brings them inside her house and sleeps outside herself.

Her life is quiet and lonely, but her goats are always by her side. This photo series shows Vesu’s life with her goats.
