We’re two record collectors in Melbourne, and we wanted to know exactly what records we’ve got... so we built an app for it.

We also wanted to remember where every record came from and when we bought it, because loads of them have a story. We wanted to see our records looking beautiful, not in a crappy looking database, so we built a cover carousel to flick through them all, cover by cover. We really wanted to see what we were actually listening to as well, so we created a beautiful wall of cover art, every time we log a listen our wall of art grows. We created Vinyl Crate Space to do all of this, and it’s all about getting those records off the shelf and onto the turntable.

We’re only just getting started, and we’re building Vinyl Crate Space with collectors. A couple of our crate crew asked if they could bring their Discogs collections across, so we built it. You can now import your whole collection on the web version, and your Discogs stays exactly as it is. There’s loads more on the way, and your feedback really does shape what we build next.

Founders pricing closes 22 October, 11:59pm Melbourne time. Solo Gold is $5.59 AUD a month at the Founders rate, about the cost of a coffee. Got a bigger collection? Platinum holds up to 10,000 records and it’s $8.95 AUD a month, less than a slice of cake at the cafe. Save even more if you pay yearly. If you sign up at the Founders rate, your price stays the same for as long as you keep your subscription, so pick the plan that fits your collection before the 22nd. Some people pack sunscreen and a good book for a holiday. We pack a crate of records and a record player.

Clothes? We’ll work it out. Toothbrush? Probably. But the turntable gets its own bag and the best seat in the car, and the records got so much thought we made them their own crate in Vinyl Crate Space. Meet our Road to Nowhere Road Trip crate.

We built Vinyl Crate Space because we wanted more of our records off the shelf and on the turntable. These two features are the ones we use the most, and they’re the ones we’re really proud of.

Adding a record is so simple. Take a photo of the cover, pick the right one and it’s in your collection, tracklist and all.

Then every time we put a record on, we log the listen. The cover joins our listening wall, and we love watching that wall grow and seeing what we’ve actually been playing.

There’s loads more in there, but these two are the heart of it for us.

We may have done a little more digging since we launched... 10 record stops, 49 records, and every one is in Vinyl Crate Space. Want your records in there too? Founders pricing closes 22 October.

Melbourne’s officially the record store capital of the world (most record stores per person, ahead of Tokyo, London and Berlin), so really, it would be rude not to. We hit Greville the weekend we launched, J Wray down in Torquay, a gig at Jazz Lab, loads of our Melbourne favourites, then the record fair at Queen Vic last weekend. Three came straight from the artists themselves, which is such a good feeling.

Every one of our new records looks amazing in Vinyl Crate Space, with where we found it and when we bought it saved right there, so the story stays with the record. When they come off the shelf and onto the turntable, they make a statement on our Listening Wall.

The Founders rate is $44.95 AUD a year until 22 October (11:59pm Melbourne, Australia time), then it goes to $64.95 AUD. That’s a whole year for the cost of one new record. If you sign up at the Founders rate, your price stays the same for as long as you keep your subscription.

Put this on this week and wow, the memories came flooding back. Billy Joel’s Концерт used to be on repeat in my car years ago!! Up so LOUD, windows down, singing every word. Playing the vinyl this week and I’m so shocked by my music memory brain!
How do I not remember what I had for breakfast, but I remember every word of every song from more than 20 years ago?
Found this gem last Saturday at @bnd.musicfactory in Mornington, the live double from Billy Joel’s 1987 tour of the Soviet Union, and I really couldn’t believe I found it!
It’s in our crate now, with a note about the tape in my car. Now every time I pull it out, the memory comes with it. That’s what it’s all about for us, every record has a story.

So this is happening... three Duet Gold plans up for grabs at the record fair at Queen Vic Market this Sunday Oct 4th! That’s a year each of our plan for two, for you and the person you share your records with.
The draws are at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Look out for our banner near the coffee van in the middle of the shed.
Come and see us, grab a free account and enter the draw. The record you find on Sunday could be sitting in your beautiful cover carousel before you’ve even left the market, with the story of where you found it saved right there with it. Because every record has a story.
We’ll have our crate cards with us too, so grab a couple for the records you’re gonna find. When a seller tells you the story behind a record, its history, the artist, where it’s been, you can capture it and add it to your notes in the app before you forget it.

We can’t wait to see what you dig up!

Check out this pull up banner hanging out with some of our vinyl. It’s official, we’re doing our first record fair stall! We’re heading out into the wild to hang out with you!

Join us at the Melbourne Record Club Record Fair at Queen Vic Market (Melbourne), Sunday 4 October, 9am to 4pm, Shed C. 45+ tables of new and used vinyl with CDs and tapes amongst it, and DJ Brett Wolfie spinning all day. Make a day of it while you’re there, the Iconic Queen Vic Market is well worth a wander.

Come find us in the middle of the shed near the coffee van. For our fellow analogue lovers, bring a pen. Grab a few crate cards on your way past, go and dig, scribble down whatever you find out there, then come back with your finds and we’ll set you up with a free account and show you how to add them in, so you can see what your records look like in Vinyl Crate Space, the cover art, the notes, the shop it came from, the day it came home. Then go home and have a proper play.

We’ve got a few things to give away across the day as well, stay tuned for more details.

Post number 55. Fives follow us around, 55, 555, they turn up on clocks, flight numbers, record prices…so often that we’ve stopped calling it a coincidence, so for this one we’ve each picked 5 records we think are essential listens and we’ve put them in a crate.

It’s a mixed bag. Abbey Road sitting next to Blade Runner, Tracy Chapman next to Kick, Queen next to OK Computer.

The one you’ll see at the end is Moby’s Future Quiet, picked up at Popcultcha in Geelong back in July. It’s been played nine times between us since then and there’s a note on it from each of us, because it’s just such an incredible record. That’s the bit we really love, the notes, the shop it came from, the day it came home, all of it sitting right there with the cover art.

Our Founders window runs 55 days as well, and that one’s no accident, we set it at 55 on purpose. It’s open until 22 October.

Today we were heading into nature for a well needed walk, then Des hurt his back, so we did the next most nourishing thing... record shopping.

We needed a stylus, heard @dutchvinylrecordstore had them, and since we were in Collingwood we couldn’t miss a visit to @northside_records and the Funkmaster himself. Thanks Chris, you’ve got such incredible wisdom & knowledge. Five of your picks came home with us. Already listened to 2! What a treat!

Then at Dutch the bins distracted us on the way to the counter, and four more jumped into our hands... records seem to have a way of doing that…

No stylus, they were super helpful and sent us to @vinylrevivalstore I don’t know how we did it, but we actually resisted the bins there (we already had 9 in the car…). We’ll definitely be back! Thanks for the stylus, and holy moley, you’ve got incredible turntables!!! We have our eye on one of those beautiful Audio Technica ones!

9 records, 3 shops, I blame Des’ sore back.

I don’t blame him!! I’m secretly jealous and pretty happy!! Look at these!
Glass Beams was on my Wishlist after a record store owner in Quebec recommended it to me, I couldn’t bring myself to buy an Aussie record in Canada, so I was pretty chuffed to come home and find it in the crate.
