As part of their North American Never Enough Pt. 2 Tour, Turnstile brought to New York their basement-to-stadium energy, chaos and that’s right, the love, too. Clipse, now officially back by popular demand, brought their legendary weight. The band Julie kicked off the show, bringing their raw, modern blend of noise rock/shoegaze. Right in between it all was a packed crowd that didn’t care about genre lines. Different sounds and different scenes captivated by a shared energy.

The hardcore/hip-hop throughline goes beyond Turnstile x Clipse going all the way back to the beginning of both genres. From The Beastie Boys playing with Bad Brains in their early hardcore days to genre-crossing collaborations like Biohazard and Onyx’s “Judgment Night” and Cold World and Sean Price’s “How the Gods Chill”, hardcore and hip hop have always been connected.

Turnstile’s extraordinary rise from playing VFWs and small art spaces to selling out amphitheaters and headlining major festivals continues to evoke debate between those who celebrate their flagbearing of DIY punk ethics into the mainstream and those who question what that ultimately means for the historically underground counterculture of hardcore. But one thing seems clear: they haven’t seemed to forget their roots, the struggle or the streets.
