VIOLET MIDDLEBROOK
Monument of Decay
Ceramic, glaze, and wool
10 × 20 inches

Violet Middlebrook is an interdisciplinary artist who received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 2026. Raised in Upstate New York, her practice is deeply informed by queer ecology and the interconnected systems of the natural world. Working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, she explores themes of decay, regeneration, the abject, communal structures found in nature, and the relationship between the body and its environment. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and is the recipient of the Henriette Reiss Award for Artistic Endeavor.

Artist Statement (Excerpt)
My work is rooted in a profound reverence for both decay and regeneration. I am fascinated by the beauty and complexity of these natural processes and use imaginative imagery to explore my relationship to the physical body. Rather than viewing decay as an ending, I see it as a transformative state—a moment when the body is no longer defined by burden or limitation but becomes one organism among many, participating in an intricate communal system.
My work reflects a longing to exist within those systems. In my present state, I often feel estranged from the natural world, yet every creature I create becomes a self-portrait, and every ecosystem that surrounds it embodies the community and interdependence I seek. Through these imagined worlds, I explore the possibility that beauty lies not in permanence, but in transformation, reciprocity, and renewal.

On view for the group exhibition, Elemental Effervescence curated by Yasmeen Abdallah.

“Form of Cyclical Regeneration”

Ceramic, 6 x 9”, Summer 2025

I imagine this form in constant motion, this is only a brief capturing of its existence. In my mind it is involved in a continuous cycle of collapsing in on itself and rebuilding itself out. It pulls its arms through its own center and births them again, they reform as they slide out. It is a cell eternally regenerating.

I made this sculpture in a study abroad program over the summer and it was not broken when I finished it but it was in fact broken when it was shipped to me🥲 this is nothing compared to the other one though which I have repaired and is coming to your eyeballs soon😛🪺🐚 by @violet_middlebrook_art
