Arriving means walking the length of the garden: a sequence of outdoor rooms, each setting the scene before you so much as reach it.

“I definitely do think of the garden that way. You have to walk through it; so it’s really important that it looks nice, has a feeling.”

Many years ago now I helped a client who had spent time working in Tokyo with this London apartment. With an awkward outlook we decided to make shoji screens to sit against the windows. I’ve been travelling in Japan for two weeks and am again bewitched by the subtle play of light, shade and privacy that these screens provide in so many different situations. by @violetburns

Mohi Museum, Kyoto - I M Pei. The collection is exquisite too, every item beautifully considered as you would anticipate in Japan.
The approach is through a tunnel which bores through the hillside, to reveal the spectacular doorway with single pine placed to perfection taken in MIHO MUSEUM by @violetburns
