𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞.

Inspired by a medieval Danish ballad, The Meeting on the Turret Stairs tells the story of the doomed lovers Hellelil and Hildebrand.

When Hellelil’s father discovers their forbidden love, he and her seven brothers set out to kill Hildebrand.

Before leaving to face them, the lovers share one final embrace on the castle’s winding staircase. In the battle that follows, Hildebrand kills Hellelil’s father and six of her brothers. As he raises his sword against the youngest, Hellelil begs him to spare his life. He grants her wish, but in that single moment of mercy, the youngest brother kills him.

Heartbroken by Hildebrand’s death, Hellelil is taken from everything she loves. Unable to overcome her grief, she eventually dies of a broken heart.

Rather than painting the violence, Frederic William Burton chose to immortalize the quiet moment before tragedy, their final farewell, suspended in silence just before everything is lost. by @violetharem
