It’s been a while. Time for an oystercatcher update!.Five months ago, my fellow Timaruvians and I were delighted when 3 wee oystercatchers hatched on the beach at Caroline Bay. I wandered down there daily, watched the bird parents work together to feed and protect the babies, watched the chicks grow up. I posted a few videos. .In late February, not long after my most recent post, a violent storm rolled through. I never saw the family of five together again. At most, I only ever counted four. By then, the chicks could fly and gather their own food, and were almost indistinguishable from their parents. I feared the worst but chose to nurture happy thoughts. Perhaps one was “relocated” by the storm, or perhaps it was simply time for Nature to separate the family. Not to go all empty-nester, but even this cheerier scenario—a completely necessary, predictable outcome—made me sad. 😅.It’s winter now; dog season on our beach. The oystercatchers keep themselves hidden among the rocky coastal walls, but I still see them in quiet moments. Love this guy’s ruffled feathers. 🐧🪶.In just a few short months, they’ll be nesting again! by @violetlemay
