What does Schumann’s use of form tell us about the human desire to find oneself? What does Bacewicz’ symmetry reveal about our relationship to order and disorder? What might Haydn’s tonality and transitions suggest about love and renunciation? You’ll have to come to our recital tomorrow to find out…..

In searching for the rhetorical significance of a work’s construction, we can begin to understand why that music ought to endure—beyond the simple truth of its capacity to move people. We continue to play this music not only because it abstractly moves us, but because it offers insights about the human condition, sentiments that ring true centuries later, reimagined in each successive translation.

Writing these program notes was my “passion project” of sorts, and it has turned out to be more meaningful for me than I could have ever imagined. All we have, when we enter into dialogue with a score, is our subjectivity (and those of our collaborators!)—perhaps, then, our work is not to renounce our human subjectivity in efforts to access some “objective truth” about a work of art (does that exist, anyway? Even the physical score is a mere translation…), but instead to explore the manifold versions of what the composer might have been trying to say (subconsciously or consciously). The longer I sat in Central Park in front of a blank page, stumped about what I could possibly offer in words about this music, which speaks for itself and needs no “explanation,” the more details emerged miraculously from the music.

Metaphor and analogy are some of the most effective ways that we can observe this continuity of thought and emotion throughout the course of human history, and across divisions of genre. I’ve tried, with the gracious help of poets and mathematicians past, to communicate the philosophical underpinnings of each of these works, as our quartet sees them, to find what persisting truths they offer us in our modern world. The goal is, of course, never to prescribe/impose an idea onto the listener, but rather to offer one possible reading of these pieces (Which is all we can aim to do as performers anyway!) by @violinvibs
