I'm delighted to announce that my first collection, "Worrier Poet", is now printed and available to buy 😊 This has been a labour of love, and while it has gone through several changes from where it began, I'm honestly really proud to have finally produced it. Blending together a few of my favourites pieces written over the last decade, the collection is divided between five categories - Authorial (poetry about poetry); Entropy (love, lust, loss & laughter); Imagining (fantasy, mythology & history); Outspoken (social & political); and Understanding (mental health, introspection & soul searching) - and peppered with beautiful illustrations from my friend @curiousinklings 😊 I'm so happy to finally be able to share this with you all, so if you fancy grabbing a copy it would mean a lot to me (I'll even sign it if you like!). Another holiday read, though I'd sprinkle in some fiction for a pallet cleanser. This was a wonderful read - presented as a memoir of the world's leading expert on dragons and her related adventures, the writing is warm and gently charming, the explanations of dragonic anatomy believable detailed (along with the world, which feels established and familiar, and like it's got actual history to it rather than just a shallow name-swapped eastern Europe), the adventure clips along at a nice pace, and most of all the protagonist is nice to spend time with, striving to succeed in a male-dominated environment whilst earnestly exploring their conflicting feelings. The rest of the series is already on my wishlist, so more dragons on the horizon #fantasy #dragons #adventure #goodbook by @virtual_scribe

Another holiday read. I was given @thedeadrabbitny cocktail book a few years ago (a gorgeous hardback, half recipe book, half graphic novel), but had no idea this one existed until I found it completely by chance in a bookshop in Roscommon. Again, gorgeously presented, there are some absolute crackers in here I'm looking forward to attempting at some point (with a little help from the duty free in photo 3), and the Spiced Guinness Syrup is definitely going into some kind of fruitcake #cocktail #irishwhiskey #guinness #deadrabbits by @virtual_scribe

Last week I spent a very relaxing few days in Ireland, and managed to get in some lovely reading time (as opposed to most holidays, where I bring 3 books and don't read more than five pages). I picked this up at the Colosseum on my birthday, took me a while to get around to it but wow, what a read. Chapter by chapter, Toner breaks down criminality in different sections of Roman society (killing, theft, blasphemy, corruption, etc.) and details how it was perceived, how it was punished, and what that can tell us about the social norms and moral values of a civilisation. Turns out, being innocent or guilty was not nearly as important as the appearance of guilt; that almost any crime could be justified depending on the circumstances; that judges and lawmakers really had very little idea what they were doing from case to case; and that (SHOCKINGLY!) the system could always be heavily manipulated to benefit the rich whilst crushing and oppressing the poor. The closing chapter does a particularly great job of summarising everything, pointing out how barbaric this supposedly enlightened society could be, and how in a lot of ways, things haven't changed that much! #history #historybooks #rome #crimeandpunishment by @virtual_scribe

I'm always happy to learn a little more about #shakespeare and London, and this lovely book combines them both! A fascinating historical account of the city at the time of Shakespeare's rise to fame, this charts the development of the Bard's work within the context of English theatre, drama, religion, politics and societal fashions of the late 16th/early 17th century, and really makes you appreciate how remarkable it is that Shakespeare's works ever made it to the stage, let alone survived for 400 years! by @virtual_scribe
