This June marks a big moment for Visible Records. We just received notification of our 501(c) (3) status! We’re grateful to the constant support and encouragement from all of you and our board:

(Slide 2) Joumana Altallal is an Iraqi-Lebanese writer who grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. She received her BA from the University of Virginia and her MFA in poetry at the University of Michigan’s Helen Zell Writers’ Program.

(Slide 3) Luis Vasquez La Roche is an Afro-Trinidadian-Venezuelan interdisciplinary artist and scholar whose work materializes across performance, installation, video, sound, sculpture, and painting. Their practice is grounded in Orisha traditions, ritual, carnival, the power of oral history, personal and historical memory, and the tangible and intangible legacies passed down through generations.

(Slide 4) Kate Fowler is a photographer & educator from Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Virginia
Commonwealth University with a BFA in Photography & Filmmaking and has since directed arts-based programming educational programming in Richmond, NYC, Europe and Whitesburg, Kentucky. Kate has worked for the Magnum Foundation, leading their Photography Expanded initiative, and at Appalshop as Director of their Appalachian Media Institute. She currently works at Studio Two Three, a community arts space and print shop in Richmond, Virginia.

(Slide 5) Patricia Nguyen is an artist, educator, and scholar born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Nguyen earned her Ph.D. in Performance Studies at Northwestern University and currently an assistant professor in American Studies at the University of Virginia. She is also a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans. Her research and performance work examines critical refugee studies, political economy, forced migration, oral histories, inherited trauma, torture, and nation building in the United States and Vietnam. She has published work in Women Studies Quarterly, Women and Performance, AmerAsia, Journal of Asian American Studies, Harvard Kennedy School’s Asian American Policy Review, The Funambulist, and The Methuen Drama Anthology of Modern Asian Plays edited by Siyuan Liu and Kevin J. Wetmore, Jr. by @visible_records

Visible Records is a multifaceted, radical project, and it takes a whole lot of imagination, love, and luck to keep all the plates spinning! Often in the span of 48 hours, Visible Records transforms between arts exhibitions, live music, workshops, and a space for community powerbuilding. You’re a part of this, and we couldn’t do it without you.

Today is Giving Tuesday, and we come to you with a humble ask and an exciting offer: Can you help us keep going? If you appreciate seeing spaces in Charlottesville dedicated to artists, activists, and creating a more just future, could you spare $5-$25 a month? For the price of one coffee or meal a month, you can make a real difference. Starting today, folks who sign up for recurring monthly donations will receive a new Visible Records t-shirt we call DOUBLE 31/ATLAS, after our most recent interstellar visitor. Today is a celebration of the many histories, cultures, languages, sounds and traditions that make South Africa what it is.

For me, wine and music are two of the most powerful ways to tell those stories. From the vineyards of the Swartland to the sounds of South African jazz, this event is an opportunity to share a piece of home here in Charlottesville.

Join me at Visible Records on November 21st for an evening of South African jazz, wine and history, featuring 6–8 wines from A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines and a curated journey through the music and cultural history that shaped South Africa.
