Dance class is the time for exploration. Where mistakes are allowed and learned. As an educator, I never expect young dance artists in training to have a “perfect class” or pick up the choreography (especially not mine) down to every detail right away, in one hour. I look for the the in-between moments, the nuances and elements of individuality that adds layers to my choreography. Specifically, choosing to approach the choreography a bit differently by adding their own flare and style while keeping the integrity of the choreography and technique. I want dancers to persuade observers, focus on the transitions and the emotional impact. While I am not against it, I don’t always expect a super clean and aesthetically pleasing routine at the end of a class or in general. But instead I expect effort towards trying something new and challenging while keeping the audience engaged. Class is a moment to practice purposeful action, storytelling and choices. So I believe mistakes are a must in class to be fully honest as an artist, prepared and present for the performance. Thank you to the amazing dancers of @dcdancela for tackling this challenge as always I adore you all!

A snippet of a session with @briar.rose.dano…working on Expansion.

In this particular session we were working on keeping a steady flow of energy. Maintaining that energy with controlled and sustained movements. Prolonging them while still keeping the texture, intention and integrity of the choreography.

Getting her to take a “bigger bite” meaning take greater risks and extend further than what she is used to. Turning the subtleties into storytelling and emotion. While it can be a stylistic choice at times, every movement should not be approached with an “agressive attack”, jerky transitions or constantly rebounded. The audience should see moments of breath within the movement, along with texture, stability and grace. These elements intertwined with emotion allow for a more thought provoking performance.

I always like to throw different music at her to see what her ear catches and understands. As training your ear as a dancer is equally as important as training your mind and body.
