🍂✨ Autumn break in the archipelago

For many families, autumn break is the perfect excuse to slow down and spend more time outdoors.

The archipelago is full of autumn colours, peaceful forests and seasonal treasures – including funnel chanterelles for those who know where to look. And when the evenings grow darker and the skies are clear, another experience awaits: a breathtaking star-filled sky far from the city lights. ✨

Take a walk, plan a day trip or stay a little longer. Autumn in the archipelago has its own rhythm – quieter, colourful and full of small moments worth remembering.

Follow your own path – or choose one of the many marked nature trails around the archipelago.
👉 Find nature trails and inspiration on Visit Pargas under Activities on land → Nature trails. Link in bio.

🧡 Slow down, breathe deep and enjoy autumn in the archipelago with both body and soul 🧡

🍂 A little town-centre tip: explore Old Town Malmen

Just a short walk from the centre of Pargas you’ll find Old Town Malmen – a charming historic neighbourhood with beautiful old wooden houses and plenty of stories to discover.

Wander through the narrow lanes at your own pace and look out for the information signs telling the stories of the houses and some of the people who once lived here. The walking maps of the area were also renewed this summer, making it even easier to explore.

The houses are still private homes, so enjoy the neighbourhood and its history while respecting the people who live here today. 🏡

A lovely little walk in the heart of Pargas – and something you can enjoy at any time of the year.

🍄 Mushroom season in the archipelago

The forests of the Finnish archipelago are full of little treasures at this time of year. You can still find chanterelles, while boletes and funnel chanterelles are now having their moment.

Thanks to Finland’s Everyman’s Rights, everyone can enjoy nature and pick wild berries and mushrooms – while respecting nature, landowners and other visitors. And of course, only pick mushrooms you can identify with certainty.

A good mushroom harvest can also be enjoyed long after autumn. Dry or freeze your mushrooms for winter – or why not fill a few beautiful jars with dried mushrooms and give them as Christmas gifts? 🎁

Do you have a favourite mushroom recipe? Share it with us in the comments! 🍄 by @visitarchipelago

It was one of the coldest days in May, but it was absolutely beautiful! ❄️☀️

As a pilgrim travelling along the St. Olav Waterway, you can also sail a few miles on board of the Tacksamheten – just as King Olav Haraldsson did back in the 11th century, when he made his way back to Norway from exile in Novgorod.

Skipper did an amazing job as a real little skipper, and I still love thinking back to sailing through the Finnish Archipelago. 🇫🇮

Thank you, Sami, for the wonderful stories and this unforgettable experience! ❤️ by @visitarchipelago

🍂 The archipelago is open all year round

Even though the Archipelago Trail and the Small Archipelago Trail can no longer be travelled as complete circular routes after 13 September, the archipelago itself is still open, alive and easy to explore.

Follow the Archipelago Road, hop from island to island and enjoy the sea, the landscapes and the slower rhythm of the season.

Autumn is a wonderful time to discover the archipelago – fewer crowds, beautiful nature and plenty of space to simply breathe. Come for a day trip or stay a little longer. You’ll also find restaurants, accommodation and services open throughout the year.

🎶 Culture doesn’t end when summer does.

Pargas has a lively cultural scene all year round – with music playing a big part in it. Across our archipelago, there is something happening week after week.

This autumn brings everything from Beatles and Baroque to sing-along events, jazz and live music by local bands.

So why not plan a visit, whether you are coming from near or far? You’ll also find accommodation and restaurants open throughout the year.

After this weekend, the Archipelago Trail closes for the season, but the archipelago does not. 💛

After 13 September, two seasonal ferry connections stop operating:
⛴️ between Houtskär and Iniö
⛴️ between Nagu and Hanka

You can still reach every island using the regular ferry connections. The only difference is that you can no longer travel the entire route as one continuous loop.

The archipelago is alive all year round, with accommodation, restaurants, shops, activities and other services available beyond the summer season. Keep exploring the islands throughout autumn, winter and spring. 🌊 by @visitarchipelago

Two market days to add to your September calendar 🍂

On Saturday 12 September, the traditional autumn market returns to Gamla Malmen, Pargas’ charming old town. From 10 am to 2 pm, the Old Market Square and the nearby sheep pasture will fill with stalls and marketgoers. While you are there, take time to wander along the narrow streets and admire the old wooden houses in one of Pargas’ most atmospheric neighbourhoods.

📍 Old Market Square and the sheep pasture, Gamla Malmen, Pargas

🗓 Saturday 12 September, 10 am–2 pm

The following Saturday, 19 September, the Archipelago Harvest Market takes over Nagu’s South Harbour. Around Kajutan, you can shop for local delicacies and unique handicrafts, meet entrepreneurs and producers from the archipelago, and enjoy activities and entertainment throughout the day.

🗓 Saturday 19 September, 10 am–3 pm

Two good reasons to plan a September trip to the archipelago – which market will you visit?

Sometimes the places closest to home are the ones we keep postponing. But you do not have to travel far to feel like you are on holiday. Pack an overnight bag, choose a few stops and set off on a late-summer adventure in the archipelago. You can travel the entire Archipelago Trail until 13 September.

Share your favourite place along the route in the comments! 💛 by @visitarchipelago

Are you planning one more trip along the Archipelago Trail before the season ends? 👋

On Friday, 11 September, we’re celebrating the Archipelago Trail’s 30th anniversary – and we’d love you to join us!

During the day, you’ll find us aboard M/S Replot 2, which operates between Houtskär and Iniö. We’ll be serving coffee and biscuits and bringing along a few small Archipelago Trail surprises. ⛴️

The Archipelago Trail remains open through Sunday, 13 September.

No, you do not have to complete the Archipelago Trail in one day. Quite the opposite!

There are places to stay all along the route, including hotels, guesthouses, campsites, cottages and other unique accommodation.

By staying for a night or two, you will have time to experience more than the journey between ferries: enjoy dinner without rushing, watch the sun set over the sea and wake up to another day in the archipelago ⛴️ by @visitarchipelago
