Fodor’s Travel has named Dodge City the One Thing You Have to Do in Kansas because of its blend of unique charm and historical reenactments. In her article The One Thing You Have to Do in Every State, Fodor’s Travel editor Amanda Sadlowski cited the chance to watch gunfights at high noon, learn about the legendary lawmen of the West, and see the world-class Long Branch Variety Show as reasons that Dodge City tops the list in the state of Kansas.

“We are excited to be named the One Thing You Have to Do in Kansas by Fodor’s Travel,” said Megan Welsh, director of the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It is gratifying to know that during our nation’s 250th anniversary, Dodge City is being recognized as a true must-see destination.”

25 years later, a little-known story from September 11, 2001, is getting new attention.

The Baltimore Banner (@baltimorebanner) has published a feature by reporter Giacomo Bologna about the 78 passengers aboard US Airways Flight 29, traveling from Baltimore to Los Angeles when the attacks began. Their flight was diverted to Garden City, Kansas, and the passengers were then brought to Dodge City.

The story follows Maura Dwyer, one of those passengers, as she prepares to return to Dodge City for the community’s annual 9/11 memorial. Twenty-five years ago, Dodge City residents opened their homes and hearts to stranded travelers, providing meals, lodging and an unforgettable rendition of the national anthem.

A remarkable story of compassion, community and a day none of us will ever forget.
