Before Cain’s Ballroom became a stop for some of today’s biggest touring acts, it was home to the sounds of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, the originators of Western Swing.
From 1935 to 1942, the band broadcast its jazz- and mariachi-infused take on country music from Cain’s. More than 90 years later, the century-plus-old venue is still making music history.

Tulsa’s music history isn’t just heard around town. It’s preserved here, too.
Explore the archives of Oklahoma legend Woody Guthrie at the Woody Guthrie Center, then dive into Bob Dylan’s life and work at the Bob Dylan Center, located just steps away in the Tulsa Arts District.

Follow the giant neon arrow that says “Live Music” down the stairs to The Lowdown, a subterranean venue that bills itself as a jazz club, but is actually much more. The calendar at this intimate 100-seat outpost also features soul, R&B and funk, with some standup comedy tossed in for good measure.

If it was good enough of a hangout for Tulsa Sound pioneers Leon Russell, JJ Cale and Eric Clapton back in the 1970s, this low-key roadside bar in Midtown is good enough for music-lovers today.
Established in 1958, it’s pretty much a Tulsa institution. And Paul Benjaman, a torch-bearer of the Tulsa Sound, has been in residency on Sunday nights for 14 years of its existence.

It’s no accident that seeing a show at Thelma’s Peach feels like hanging out in your friend’s living room while they jams with their band. Andrew O’Meilia, a musician and landscape architect, opened Thelma’s in 2019 after hosting bands at a stage he built in his backyard in downtown Tulsa. That same laid-back, familiar air defines Thelma’s.

You can’t think of Route 66 without thinking of a road trip. @philbrookmuseum’s new exhibit, “Roadside Abstractions: Route 66 & American Modernism,” asks you to experience American art the way you’d experience the open road: with a sense of adventure.
The show features 50+ American artists including Georgia O’Keeffe, Grace Hartigan, Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and Barkley Hendricks.
As the Mother Road opened up a new world for Americans to travel cross-country, these artists were paving a new trail of American abstract art.

Let’s welcome @palominobooksandmusic to the Kendall Whittier neighborhood! In the few months this Indigenous/Latine owned bookstore and listening room has been open, it’s hosted dozens of events like Cherokee language classes, live concerts with local musicians, book clubs, zine workshops, and children’s book readings.

Museum That! is a four-day museum experience hosted entirely in American Sign Language for those in the signing community, by Tulsa-based nonprofit @lololook___ .
The experience is designed for members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, as well as their families, to experience cultural institutions in their own language.

🛣️ Cyrus Avery “Father of Route 66” - Tulsa, OK

Cyrus Avery is known as the “Father of Route 66.” As chairman of the Tulsa County Commission from 1913 to 1916, he oversaw construction of the concrete 11th Street Bridge across the Arkansas River — at the time the only concrete bridge west of the Mississippi River. A decade later, as a federal highway consultant, he suggested the new Chicago-to-Los Angeles highway take advantage of Tulsa’s 11th Street Bridge to cross the Arkansas River, which is why Route 66 ran through Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas rather than a more direct Midwest path. Avery also personally chose “66” as the highway’s number.

The bridge carried Route 66 traffic for decades until it was closed to vehicles in 1980 and to pedestrians in 2008, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and renamed the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in 2004.

Today, the “East Meets West” sculpture stands nearby at the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza — a 40-foot-wide, 10-ton bronze made of nearly 1,000 separate pieces, created by artist Robert Summers and dedicated on November 9, 2012. It depicts Cyrus, his wife Essie, their daughter Helen, and the family cat traveling westbound in their Model T, meeting an eastbound teamster hauling oil-field barrels and pipe on a horse-drawn wagon whose horses are spooked by the car — a moment the plaza’s own plaques call “a fictitious but probable” scene from Avery’s life. taken in Route 66 Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza by @visittulsa
