A nature walk — a different kind of luxury.

An LV, a Hermès, a beautiful home in the middle of a cosmopolitan city — they can all bring joy, and there’s nothing wrong with being proud of what you’ve built.

But there’s something about having the freedom to leave the concrete behind, walk among trees, breathe deeply and hear nothing but nature.

For me, that’s the real flex.

📍 Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, SH73 | Canterbury

A worthwhile roadside stop on the journey between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass, Cave Stream Scenic Reserve sits in the limestone landscape of the Castle Hill Basin.

The reserve is best known for Cave Stream, a 594-metre cave through which the stream flows underground before emerging into Broken River. You can experience the area without entering the cave — the short Cave Stream Loop Walk takes around 35 minutes and has viewpoints overlooking the cave entrances, limestone formations and surrounding mountains.

For those considering the cave itself, this is not a casual walk. The route involves cold, fast-flowing water, waterfalls and sections requiring scrambling. DOC recommends the loop walk as the safer way to experience the reserve.

🚗 Access: SH73, between the Broken River bridge and Craigieburn Forest Park
⏱️ Loop walk: approx. 35 min
🚻 Toilets: available at the car park
⚠️ Cave entry: expert-level and conditions dependent

This roadside waterfall is one of the recognisable sights along the Arthur’s Pass route. Water flows down the steep rock face and across the road through a channel, with a small shelter-like structure beside the falls.

It’s an easy stop while driving through Arthur’s Pass and makes for a good photo opportunity, particularly when water levels are high. The surrounding alpine scenery adds to the setting, although the waterfall itself is relatively modest compared with some of the larger natural attractions in the area.

Worth stopping for: A quick photo, especially if you’re already driving through Arthur’s Pass.

The valley is accessed from Mount White Road, about 24 km from Arthur’s Pass village, with the track starting at Hawdon Shelter. From there, you can follow the Hawdon Hut Track deeper into the valley — it’s around 3 hours to Hawdon Hut, so this is more of a proper backcountry walk than a quick sightseeing stop. It’s not particularly touristy, but that certainly doesn’t make it any less beautiful. If you enjoy backcountry exploring, quieter roads and places that feel a little removed from the commercial side of travel, Hawdon Valley is a beautiful place to spend some time. It’s less crowded, more peaceful, and simply a lovely part of Canterbury to get to know.

Taking some time off to slow down, appreciate nature’s gifts, and just enjoy being present in the moment. Sometimes we get so caught up in our everyday routines that we forget to stop and take in the beauty around us. Tunnel Beach is hands down one of Dunedin’s most impressive spots. Giant sea arches, rugged cliffs, and a historic 1870s rock tunnel lead you down to a hidden, wave-battered cove.
Essential details for your visit:
• 🚗 Getting there: 10–15 mins drive from Dunedin city center.
• 👟 The track: 2.6 km return. Easy walk down, solid leg-workout on the way back up!
• 🌊 Best time: Aim for low tide so you can walk out on the sand.
• 🚫 Safety: No swimming here due to dangerous rips, but the views are elite.
