#DidYouKnow that #VisualStudies Journal, the #IVSA's main publication, was launched in 1986?
The same year that the #InternationalVisualSociologyAssociation held its first international meeting at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, the association’s flagship journal was launched under the name "Visual Sociology Review", later renamed "Visual Studies".

To mark the 40th anniversary and in line with the IVSA's visual identity redesign, #VisualStudiesJournal is also getting a fresh, new look. What do you think?

Our first issue of 2026 is out! Along with our organization the @_ivsa_, we turn 40 this year. We have some big plans coming up, but in the meantime…

Our inaugural issue of 2026 maintains key aims of Visual Studies, to disperse academic content that expands the bounds of what constitutes visual research. Further, this general issue prioritises visual content while also showcasing themes that arise through the hundreds of submissions we receive annually. Our hope is that our multifarious formats invigorate dialog about issues, ideas, and spaces that garner less consideration on other platforms.

Absolute Disorder" with Emilie Tullio & Amos Krakover. @mille.occhi1000 shows us Can you (still) hear the sea breathing?, as it was presented in the @visualstudiesjournal Exhibition at @111CM, curated by @juliepatarinjossec, as part of the 2025 @_ivsa_ Conference in #Suwon.

Can you (still) hear the sea breathing? is a meditative, multi-sensory journey through the coastal edges of southern #SouthKorea, where the daily lives of fishermen interlace with the murmur of tides and the breath of invisible spirits.

Blending digital photography, video, sound, and found objects, the piece invites us to rediscover and experiment the subtle rituals of labor and tide, and the fragile balance between humans, non humans and myth.

#Ethnographic in intent yet #poetic in form, this piece is also threaded through my own history as I am the granddaughter of a fisherman who migrated. Hence, the installation becomes a tidepool of voices and presences, both visible and invisible, as well as an invitation to ask ourselves: can we still hear the sea breathing, within and around us, as its ancient pulse is stirred by warming currents, tangled in nets of plastic and reshaped by the current of change?

"Absolute Disorder" with Sylvia Kouveli. @sylvia.kouveli shows us But You Don’t Look Ill, as it was presented in the @visualstudiesjournal Exhibition at @111CM, curated by @juliepatarinjossec, as part of the 2025 @_ivsa_ Conference in #Suwon.

Invisible conditions may lead to questioning your #identity, or to #SelfExclusion. “But you don’t look ill” is a visual exploration of #SocialStigma among women with #InflammatoryBowelDisease in England.

Assuming the role of the facilitator rather than the artist, the maker of this installation invites you to immerse yourself in the experiences of the women with IBD who were involved in this #participatory research project.

"Absolute Disorder" with 1220. @y1220l1220 (@ruru.my_, @hsinyi.yang) showed us Boxed Ukiyo, as it was presented in the @visualstudiesjournal Exhibition at @111CM, curated by @juliepatarinjossec, as part of the 2025 @_ivsa_ Conference in #Suwon.

Boxed Ukiyo is an #installation based on the fieldwork in #Tokyo’s Nezu Kanon Shopping District—a retro Shitamachi area shaped by gentrification and quiet resilience.

Centering on two women shop owners from Yorozuya Hotaru (a recycling shop) and Ringo-ya (a tea shop), the work gathers personal stories, objects, and recorded dialogues to construct micro-narratives that reflect the district’s cultural continuity and transformation.

Combining the idea of a “boxout” (a highlighted narrative) with Ukiyo, the transient “floating world” of Edo-period art, the work reimagines place through different sensory fragments.

Using bricolage and installation, Boxed Ukiyo blends photography, sound, and found materials to create a multi-sensory, research-based artwork. It proposes a reflexive, inclusive methodology that merges scholarship and artistic practice—challenging conventional research formats while exploring themes of urban change, gendered memory, and East Asian urban identity through embodied visual storytelling.

"Absolute Disorder" with Marty Miller. @findingthefoundphoto shows us Authoring Remains, as it was presented in the @visualstudiesjournal Exhibition at @111CM, curated by @juliepatarinjossec, as part of the 2025 @_ivsa_ Conference in #Suwon.

The work consists of a series of book art pieces installed on the theme of #FoundPhotos and
#CreativeAuthorship. Each book will portray a stage in the remediation of found photographs
representing early digital camera usage in #HongKong.

The first book creatively shows how the photos on an outdated memory card were accessed.
(This method was also turned into a pictorial titled “Finding the Local (meta)picture” for the
Visual Studies journal in 2024.)

The first piece is split into two parts. 1a shows an example of a material semiotic theme created from an archive of memory cards. Meanwhile, 1b shows a recompilation showing how this original book was remediated through local Hong Kong residents taking photographs of the book while in a gallery.

Finally, the second piece, a book art in traditional book form will be presented as a discursive element on contested authorship in future archiving practices.

BookArt piece 1 carries a traditional book form and can be presented as such. BookArt pieces 2a & 2b can take sculptural forms and can extend throughout the exhibition space as needed.
