Coach Alonzo 🥎

“With 11 years at Viterbo, one of my favorite parts of coaching is getting to share the love I have for the game with our athletes and watching them grow from the moment they step on campus to the day they graduate. Throughout those years, softball has taught me that when you do things the right way it pays off, you just have to trust the process. That same mindset is something I try to pass along to our athletes every day. A coach who had a big influence on me was my former outfield coach, Gessica Garber (Huff). She could do everything she asked us to do, which earned our respect and made you want to work harder and become better. Those lessons have stuck with me throughout my coaching career and continue to shape the way I coach today. My walk-up song was “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor!”

Coach Jess 🥎

“This is my first year at Viterbo, and my favorite part about coaching here is being part of a program that values growth, hard work, and competing together. One lesson softball has taught me that I carry into coaching is to step onto the field every day as if it were the World Series. Whether it’s conditioning, practice, or a game, we approach each day like it’s the National Championship. By creating that mindset in our everyday work, we can be better prepared and more comfortable when those important games arrive. The person who has influenced me most as a coach is Coach Cassie Valdez, who was my pitching coach at UC. She helped develop me into the player, person, and coach I am today. She taught me so much throughout my career, and I hope to continue sharing the knowledge and lessons she passed down to me with the athletes I coach. My walk-up song was “Wherever I May Roam” by Metallica!”

Coach Duran 🥎

“As I head into my second year at Viterbo, one of my favorite parts of coaching is being surrounded by smart, empathetic, and strong women who love softball just as much as I do. Softball has taught me that the outlook you have on things often becomes the outlook that shapes your reality. You can’t always control what happens, but you can control how you respond, and I try to carry that mindset into coaching by reminding our players to find the positive, stay confident, and keep moving forward even when things don’t go their way. My biggest influence as a coach has been my sister, Coach Sam Duran-Kukuk, who is currently the head coach at the University of the Pacific. She was my first slapping coach, my first outfield coach, and someone I have always looked up to and relied on for both life and softball. She has played such a huge role in my journey and is a big reason why I continue to be in this game. I am incredibly grateful to have her as both a sister and mentor. And my walk-up song was “Money” by Pink Floyd!”

Coach Maria 🥎

“This is my second year at Viterbo, and my favorite part about coaching here is watching the ladies grow and improve every single day. Seeing their willingness to work hard, challenge themselves, and be part of something bigger than themselves is truly special. One lesson softball has taught me that I carry into coaching is grit. There is always a way, you just have to set your mind to it and be willing to find it. The coaches I’ve had the opportunity to work with, former coaches of mine, my family, and most importantly, my passion for the game have all influenced me throughout my coaching journey. While we didn’t have walk-up songs, if I could have had one, I would have chosen “I’m So Paid” by Akon.”
