@jezzascarb and I are extremely grateful to be the recipients of the Dr Patrick Iland Scholarship from @asvo_official This scholarship is quite unique in its open minded approach to supporting professional development that doesn’t quite fit a specific box. We’re looking forward to our travels and diving deeper into the opportunities that disease resistant varieties might provide for growers and wine producers in the Australian wine industry. There’s a time in every vineyard’s life where it’s time to cut or to run. Two years ago we commenced a reworking project on some of our older Semillon. A new cordon wire was run just above the existing wire and where possible new canes were pruned to this, with the balance spur pruned. Last winter we removed the existing trellis (minus the end posts and new cordon wire) and “reworked” all vines with replacement canes. New trellis was installed (recyclable steel @ecotrellis) and the vines secured. This winter has seen the completion of this project with all vines neatly on the wire and well structured. A new dripper wire was installed and dripper lines lifted. It looks a picture and hopefully it’s well set up for the next 30-40 years. #semillon#huntervalleywine#sustainablewinegrowingaustralia #viticultureaustralia by @vitibit

Why do we plant cover crops ? The short answer is it’s good for our vineyard ecosystem! The long answer is - it provides food for beneficial insects - both pollen and nectar but also aphids which are an alternative food source for predatory insects when pest pressure is low- organic matter for soil health- soil improvement with those brassica roots breaking up soil compaction - shelter for beneficials in the ecosystem - biodiversity of plant life which is in turn supporting biodiversity of insects, arthropods, birds and other creatures #viticultureaustralia#sustainableviticulture#sustainablewinegrowingaustralia #huntervalleywine by @vitibit

It was a pleasure to set the industry scene for the NSW @rootlings_au network at their annual conference in Canberra. Explaining the role of industry bodies and where the opportunities lie for them to participate and contribute to the industry will hopefully enable them to engage more easily. As an industry we need to support this early career cohort to grow and develop, and harness that youthful enthusiasm and passion. It was also great to be able to encourage them to apply for the various scholarships and programs that are available. I look forward to seeing their career and leadership journeys over the coming years. Great work by the conference team headed by @jennafrommarketing @maggie_seesaw by @vitibit

Pruning conversions aren’t always pretty. Trying to find the balance between best practice, commercial reality, legacy issues and budget restraint. Knowing short term gains can lead to long term pain. After a dry stretch through April May has delivered the rain goods. Just adding water has seen both the brassica based pollinator blend and the rye/fescue blend flourish.
