POSTS STORIES REELS

Over the weekend, @hbomaxanz and @rizerglobal put on an extravaganza of an event in Sydney’s Wynyard Tunnels for the Season 3 debut of House of the Dragon. @nadia.external had the daunting but delightful task of creating four Westerosi scents for each of the stages of the Dragonseed’s awakening:

• The Rat Catchers’ Passage

Mildew, brine, seawater, reeds

• The Dragon’s Lair

Sulphur, brimstone, burnt flesh, dragon’s breath

• The Hatchery

Hay, warm rocks, sweet melting amber

• The Royal Court and Iron Throne

Roses, liquor, incense, polished wood, iron

Visitors were fully immersed through all the senses in this truly spectacular setting – the belly of King’s Landing, amongst the dragon bones of old.

Two worlds meet at 𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦: perfume collectors and art lovers.

Olfactophone is a series of limited-edition scent artworks created through months of scented dialogue between two artists. Each artwork exists in finite volume (see listings below) and will never be reproduced or recreated. Of the artworks listed below, only one of each is available.

Once acquired, the work can be experienced however its collector chooses: worn on skin, transferred into an atomiser, diffused into a room, revisited occasionally as a scent archive, or simply preserved as an artwork in its own right.

ScentJay at Biophilia 🌱

Recently @nadia.external teamed up with the brains behind the Biophilia music festival to add scent to one of the DJ sets (the sensational @solfa.frequency! The way she brought the vibes was a sight and sound to behold)... this is how it went.
•
•
The way scent and sound combine in a given context to create a fourth dimension to the mood cannot be overstated. Composing and cueing fragrances in real time alongside the music shapes the atmosphere as it unfolds, bringing a sensorial euphoria to the attendees.

Live-scenting exists as a unique practice here at Vitsley Olfactive. Developed and performed by Nadia, it brings real-time olfactory curation into live DJ culture for the first time.

What makes these perfumes fine art?

Worlds collide at the 𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 exhibition: Perfume for art lovers.

People who come to 𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 and have never encountered olfactory art before often ask the same (and very justified) questions:
How do I use it? What's in it? What makes it art?

For perfume collectors, the rarity of the materials, the hand-crafted accords, and the months of conceptual development are detectable by the nose.
Art collectors immediately pick up on the deeper meanings, the beauty in the process - an artistic exchange across time, geography, culture, and medium.

For many gallery visitors, however, this is their first encounter with olfactory art. So, what makes it art? Like a performance, an abstract painting, or a site-specific sculpture, these works cannot be recreated. They are not limited for use, they are scarce because what produced them happened only once. No two artists working through the same process would arrive at the same result twice... it's the same condition that defines any work made in a limited edition: the object and the moment it came from are the same thing.

𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 began as a conversation between two artists living in different countries. Over months, ideas were exchanged through scent before we eventually met in person to create the final works together.
Each piece exists in an edition of an individual artwork, or a collection. Once acquired, it may be worn, diffused, preserved, revisited, or simply held as an object. The choice belongs to its collector.

At the core of the project is the recognition that scent resists fixed vocabulary and complete translation.
Historically, perfumery has addressed this instability by borrowing metaphors from other senses—color, landscape, emotion—resulting in poetic yet culturally specific frameworks.

Olfactophone proposes an alternative approach: using scent itself as a provisional language, similar to a pidgin, one that functions through relation rather than fluency.

🧪Workshop🧪

𝐎𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞

Every time we hold a workshop, I am always moved by the beauty and originality of the creations our participants produce.

This isn’t just a perfume workshop. It’s a session where you can experience our “Olfactophone” process firsthand.

It is truly inspiring to watch everyone carefully consider their scent choices from Nadia’s magical fragrance bases—such as “Sunshine,” “Rainforest,” and “Fruit Salad”—engage in lively discussions, and sometimes even clash over opinions, all while sharing ideas to bring their creations to life.

You are all artists💜🤎🧡

🥂Opening Night🥂

𝐎𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞

It was deeply moving to watch a quiet line form—each person drawn in to experience the stories held within our scents.

With full hearts, we thank everyone who came and shared that moment with us.

And to everyone at the gallery @airspaceprojects , our heartfelt thanks for your generous support in bringing this experience to life.

Opening Night was packed to the brim and spilling out onto the street.

Olfactophone had a queue the entire time, for which we were very grateful and amazed!

Thank you to everyone who attended and don't forget to swing by the gallery over the next couple of weekends if you didn't get the chance to smell all the fragrances or weren't able to come to Opening Night. There are other brilliant exhibitions and installations on at the gallery at the same time, so there is plenty to experience at @airspaceprojects this month. All artist talks are on Saturday June 20 at 12pm.

Many thanks from Nadia and Naoko.

YOU ARE INVITED

𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 in Sydney Opening Night

𝙊𝙡𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙚: 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵.

𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 is an olfactory body of work composed as a dialogue across countries, exploring the communicative boundaries of sensory fine art. 12 unscented concepts are "discussed" through the medium of perfume, culminating in a final 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢 - scented common language.

Each individual composition is the artist's interpretation of a singular notion. These artworks will never be available commercially and will not be re-made post-exhibition.

Debuting in Tokyo last year, 𝘖𝘭𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦 will open on Friday June 5 in @nadia.external's home town of Sydney with @naoko_perfumer present for the first week of exhibition.

All welcome
