Welcome to the Mariners family, Luke Linder!

🏡Hometown: Nanaimo, BC
🎓School: Dover Bay / Western
🏀Position: Combo Guard
📏Height: 6’4”

The Linder name is a massive one in Nanaimo basketball and Nanaimo basketball fans should be hyped that Luke is set to bring his top-end offensive talents to his hometown collegiate team after spending a redshirt year with the Western Mustangs in USports.

As a high school senior, Luke was part of a powerhouse Dover Bay Dolphins program that earned a silver medal at the 2023 BC 3A provincial championship. He also earned a First Team All-Star spot as he led the tournament in scoring. Luke was also named MVP of the Island championship that year and the Vikes Christmas Classic tournament. His siblings have also starred—and continue to excel—at Dover Bay with brother Frank also moving to the postsecondary level with the UBC Thunderbirds.

Luke’s basketball pursuits have also seen him take the floor with the CTA West basketball academy and the NJCAA’s Murray State Aggies (Kentucky). As Luke’s journey comes full circle back to Nanaimo, we’re excited for him to pull on the VIU jersey and bring his dynamite offensive game to the Mariners!

Welcome to the Mariners family, Arya Feridooni!

🏡Hometown: Tehran, Iran
🎓School: Bryant & Stratton College
🏀Position: Center
📏Height: 6’11”

This is the dictionary definition of a Big announcement as 6’11” Iranian forward Arya Feridooni transfers to VIU to join the Mariners and study arts and business. He had considerable success growing his game in Iran: he played with the U21 Iranian national team, earned first place in Armenia’s SADA Cup tournament, and claimed second place with his Mahram youth team in Iran’s first division.

His basketball travels continued as Arya suited up with Spanish side CB Villa de Valdemoro in 2023-24. In the league semifinals, he sunk a basket with two seconds remaining to send his team to overtime and an eventual victory—followed by winning the Madrid championship. He moved to North America and studied and played with the Bryant & Stratton College Bobcats (Buffalo, NY) in the USCAA, where he was named an All-Academic in consecutive years.

We’re thrilled to welcome Arya to Nanaimo, VIU, and the PACWEST for his next stop on a world-wide education and basketball journey! خوش آمدید!

Welcome to the Mariners family, Austin Bradley!

🏡Hometown: Shawnigan Lake, BC
🎓School: Belmont Secondary
🏀Position: Guard/Wing
📏Height: 6’4”

VIU is ecstatic to add an Island-grown talent in Austin. He’s excelled on the court with the 4A Belmont Bulldogs and the 3A Frances Kelsey Breakers, served as team captain in his grade 9 to 11 seasons, and was named an Island second team all-star. He has also developed his skills with The Grind elite youth basketball program and is set to jump to the collegiate ranks to study business administration and be all business on the court.

“We are excited to have Austin join us this season,” head coach Eric D’Andrea said. “He's an Island guy who has spent a lot of time working on his game the last few years and we think he'll be a great addition to our program. His size and shooting ability will translate well to the next level.” Let’s go!

Welcome to the Mariners family, Finn McDougall!

🏡Hometown: Vancouver, BC
🎓School: Kitsilano Secondary / Lennoxville Prep
🏀Position: Guard
📏Height: 5’10”

VIU’s first commitment in the Eric D’Andrea era is Finn, a skilled and high-IQ guard who attended the Split Second Basketball academy and starred for the Kitsilano Blue Demons in Vancouver before suiting up with Lennoxville Prep. He’s a two-time Vancouver city champion and a city all-star who was named Defensive MVP of the 2023 city championship and bolsters the guard rotation for the reigning conference champion Mariners. Head coach D'Andrea said Finn "brings a great level of grit and competitiveness to our program. We are excited to have him over on the Island to help grow our team's culture and we look forward to working with him this season."

Finn comes from a basketball family: his brother played at Bishop’s University and his father played for the University of Calgary. And for a fun fact, Finn can speak three languages fluently: English, French, and Italian, which should serve him well in his Bachelor of Arts studies at VIU. We can’t wait to get Finn on the court to cause problems for PACWEST opposition this season!

The ball and the torch have been passed as we welcome (back) Eric D’Andrea – our new head coach for VIU Mariners men’s basketball!

D'Andrea, from Nelson, BC, played at VIU for four seasons between 2012 and 2017 under outgoing coach Matt Kuzminski and was on VIU’s 2013 CCAA national championship team. He becomes the twelfth head coach to lead the Mariners men’s basketball program.

"Being part of the program and playing here for as long as I did meant a lot to me," D’Andrea said. "I look forward to taking on the challenge of building on the success of the program and building the culture that made playing here such a great experience."

Since 2016, D'Andrea has been a driving force with Split Second Basketball, a performance club program in BC's Lower Mainland. He served as the head of Split Second's Cobra Program, developed coaching curriculum and program standards, and helped many top students from Greater Vancouver navigate their path towards post-secondary basketball. His coaching career also includes time in Nanaimo as a head coach with Woodlands Secondary and Nanaimo District Secondary.

D’Andrea will be joined on the bench by two other Mariners alumni and CCAA national champions: assistant coaches Connor Billett and Jon Bethell.

D’Andrea’s first ID camp for prospective Mariners (ages 17+) runs Saturday, May 2 at the VIU Gymnasium in Nanaimo. Interested parties can register via the Talent ID Camp link on gomariners.ca or via the VIU Mariners Linktree in bio. Time to get to work! 🏀
