In the first two weeks of Peru we went from the coast line of Paracas to the desert of Ica. Now we’re in the Andes where we first started in Arequipa, the White City. It’s already 2300 meters altitude and sticking around for two days is a pleasure. Arequipa has many nice restaurants and bars and a relaxed atmosphere.

After we went to Colca canyon for a hike and a visit to the mountain towns. We passed a ridge on 4910 meters altitude. Drank many coca teas that helps against altitude sickness.

The spectacular views, watching condors fly around, petting alpacas and llamas and seeing plains full of vicuñas all makes it worth it.

Before we came to Lima we had to decide to stay in Miraflores and Barranco or in Centro Historico. Having stayed in Hotel Europa 25 years ago, I wanted the trip down to memory lane. Central Lima didn’t change after all this time. Maybe a bit rough compared to Miraflores, but we did get that authentic South-America kick.

or a self-proclaimed wine nerd, Tenerife is wine Mecca. No beaches, sun or all-inclusive for me — but a wholehearted yes to Volcano Teide, cloud-covered high-altitude wine sites and desolate farms with vineyards trained in a complex cordon braid. 🌋

Last week, the wine pros of the world gathered for 3 days to discuss Island Wines and their increasing popularity. Masters of Wine, international wine writers and the most influential sommeliers — all on Tenerife. Here are my highlights.

1. Josep Roca (El Celler de Can Roca ✦✦✦) opened with a poetic take on sea and islands — salinity, minerality, freshness and acidity as the common thread connecting island wines worldwide.

2. Dr. Jamie Goode on minerality in wine. Can we taste granite or limestone? No — minerals are insoluble. But bottom-up, top-down — island wines are consistently described as saline, fresh, citrusy and smoky. Science agrees.

3. Pascaline Lepeltier (author of Mille Vignes, NYC sommelier) showcased island wines on the world’s top lists — Corsica, Madeira, Tenerife, Japan. Most of them already on our list @beulingsrestaurant.

4. Meeting the icons: Jonatan García Lima (Suertes del Marqués), Antônio Maçanita, Roberto Santana (Envínate) and a new discovery — Borja Pérez González of Ignios Orígenes.

5. Driving up Teide from sea level to 2,400m — Mediterranean coast to moonscape. Unforgettable.

6. Listán Blanco, Listán Negro, Listán Prieto, Malvasia at 1,400m, Albillo Blanco — Tenerife’s indigenous grapes are versatile, almost-extinct and absolutely worth your attention. And many vines reach over 100 years, Pie Franco and prephylloxera.

Three days. Countless wines. One conclusion: island wines are impressive, unique and a must-have on top wine lists 🌊

Thank you @cabildodetenerife @vinosdetenerife @madridfusion — and Gran Hotel Taoro ✦✦✦✦✦ for the perfect base.

2 weeks left to our 18 Birthday Bites menu. @debuikvanamsterdam visited and wrote this wonderful story. Only in Dutch, but think about 18 exciting food bites and dishes. A great wine pairing with some exclusive wines. Even more special than regular. And you can shorten your menu. Just a few bites and have a couple of glasses. All perfect, but only a few spots left.

Dankjewel @basbont @vivalevin 🫶

Our 18th birthday party was a full house of friends we made through the years. Next to the 18 bites menu, we served immaculate wines from vintage ‘18 ;-)

1. Monts Damnés, Francois Cotat was an overall favourite. Even @hvdmeeberg - not a big Sauvignon fan was positively surprised by this exceptional Sancerre. Nothing to do with Sauvignon. Powerful, mineral, vibrant and lingering honey dew. Still has many years, but definitely in a good place now.

2. Carthology by Alheit. Chris and Suzaan are the original Swartland icons together with Eben Sadie and Chris Mullineux. In the Cartology you will find an overview of old bush vines from allover the cape. Chenin blanc and a small portion of Semillon. No oak, but there is a generosity in this wine that’s always so fleshy and seductive.

3. Pinot Noir Mayschoss, Laachenberg Marc Josten
We actually received these wines recently from @marcowinterberg. A weingut that keeps surprising us. This Laachenberg is profound and powerful, but it’s the small red berry brilliance that shimmers through spice and cloves, that keeps us excited. Fingerspitzen balance and full of energy.

4. Trousseau Nonceau, Caveau du Bacchus.
We have Aviet on the list for more than a decade. Still under the radar for the lot, but this is definitely the one vigneron who understands the needs of Trousseau thoroughly. Artisanal and intellectual in the bottle, honest and transparent in the glass. Low intervention, but flawless in execution.

5. Langhe Rosso, Roagna
Who doesn’t love Roagna. Elegant, smooth, deep Nebbiolo. Maybe there was a month long maceration of the skins. But the tannins in Roagna wines are always silky, and the fruit is petit.
Langhe Rosso is a modest name for a wine made by grapes of Roagna’s top vineyards, Pira (Barolo) and (Pajé) Barbaresco. Being perfectionists they keep the fruits of younger vines for this more accessible priced tier.

6. Vouvray, Clos du Bourg Moelleux, Domaine Huet
Last fall we visited this iconic domaine in Vouvray. A more than 100 years old winery and an icon of the Loire Valley. Chenin Blanc with residual sugars. Perfection in a bottle.

It’s our birthday and so we celebrate with a treat. Thursday 4th of June we start with this bday menu and serve aperitif on the house. For the rest of the month we keep on serving the bites menu. We already had a tryout this week and it was a blast. So many flavours, but really well done. Applause for the kitchen, who can make hard work look so smooth.

Ps. We are also serving extra nice wines. Some unicorns. Don’t miss it!

@fowpyng thank you for this beautiful look and feel

Who doesn’t know Rioja. But did you know that Rioja is more than oaky reds dominated by Tempranillo? Rioja is a wine region south of Bilbao. Parts of Rioja are situated in Basque Country.

Tempranillo is the main grape, but Rioja is a dynamic when region. The focus shifts to whites, sparkling and old indigenous varieties like Garnatxa and Maturana.

Rioja is divided in three regions, Rioja Alta known for Haro, which is a Disneyland for wine lovers. In the centre of town you will find some of the most famous classic wineries, like Muga, Lopez de Heredia and La Rioja Alta.

The most elegant region might be Rioja Alavesa, with its limestone soil and the Atlantic influence. Fresh, refined styles which give Rioja a new elan. Remelluri and Artuke are doing such an impressive work for the new generations. Inspiring and noteworthy.

Small boutique wineries like Miguel Merino and Elena Corzana in the beautiful mountain villages of Briones and La Bastida focus on parcellair level wines. Showing the diversity on micro-level.

Finally a great surprise were the wines and the beauty of landscape in Rioja Baja or Rioja Oriental. A Mediterranean climate, but vineyards on high altitude. Even as high as 800 meters above sea level. Cool winds creating a healthy atmosphere. Vineyards last here for decades. 80 year old vines of bush vine, biodynamic farming. Clara Conversa farms for all the great wineries in Rioja, only 5 percent she keeps for themselves. One of her wines is a macerated white, with Sauvignon, Grenache and Maturana. I fell in love with this wine.

What a great region, what a heart warming hospitality. Good food, many Michelin star restaurants and a tons of tapas bar in old town Logrono. And everywhere there is wine. Rioja is much more than you will think. We tasted many white Rioja and all on high level, but also very diverse.

Liquid gold of Remelluri. What a beautiful estate and what an amazing wines. We embrace these parcellair wines from Rioja. They are elegant and show the different expressions of the region.

The Granja Blanca is one of the most beautifully made white Rioja. Telmo Rodriguez shows us the elegance of Tempranillo. Fresh fruits, smooth tannins. Honest and pure.

Remelluri estate is located in an old monastery and there is something spiritual about these wines. A great honour to visit and taste the wines.
