Our 18th birthday party was a full house of friends we made through the years. Next to the 18 bites menu, we served immaculate wines from vintage ‘18 ;-)

1. Monts Damnés, Francois Cotat was an overall favourite. Even @hvdmeeberg - not a big Sauvignon fan was positively surprised by this exceptional Sancerre. Nothing to do with Sauvignon. Powerful, mineral, vibrant and lingering honey dew. Still has many years, but definitely in a good place now.

2. Carthology by Alheit. Chris and Suzaan are the original Swartland icons together with Eben Sadie and Chris Mullineux. In the Cartology you will find an overview of old bush vines from allover the cape. Chenin blanc and a small portion of Semillon. No oak, but there is a generosity in this wine that’s always so fleshy and seductive.

3. Pinot Noir Mayschoss, Laachenberg Marc Josten
We actually received these wines recently from @marcowinterberg. A weingut that keeps surprising us. This Laachenberg is profound and powerful, but it’s the small red berry brilliance that shimmers through spice and cloves, that keeps us excited. Fingerspitzen balance and full of energy.

4. Trousseau Nonceau, Caveau du Bacchus.
We have Aviet on the list for more than a decade. Still under the radar for the lot, but this is definitely the one vigneron who understands the needs of Trousseau thoroughly. Artisanal and intellectual in the bottle, honest and transparent in the glass. Low intervention, but flawless in execution.

5. Langhe Rosso, Roagna
Who doesn’t love Roagna. Elegant, smooth, deep Nebbiolo. Maybe there was a month long maceration of the skins. But the tannins in Roagna wines are always silky, and the fruit is petit.
Langhe Rosso is a modest name for a wine made by grapes of Roagna’s top vineyards, Pira (Barolo) and (Pajé) Barbaresco. Being perfectionists they keep the fruits of younger vines for this more accessible priced tier.

6. Vouvray, Clos du Bourg Moelleux, Domaine Huet
Last fall we visited this iconic domaine in Vouvray. A more than 100 years old winery and an icon of the Loire Valley. Chenin Blanc with residual sugars. Perfection in a bottle.
