No end of year post, but here’s a project I’ve been working on this past semester for a class.

I designed these pages to be viewed both as single pictures and split pages. Coupled with my text-focused visuals, this proved an ambitious challenge. But I think I pulled it off pretty well!

Back again after 10 years!

Coming back to China as an adult has really been life-changing. I feel that I am now able to make sense of the vivid, fragmented memories of my past visits and frame them against the rapidly urbanizing world that I’ve now seen.
China is an entirely different world- and I don’t mean that in an exoticizing way- I just mean to say that China houses an entirely different set of cultures, histories, societies, and deep, nuanced struggles that not many in “Self-Absorbed America” could understand. I’ve learned a lot on my trip here: about my heritage, my family, myself, my own place in the world- but most of all, how truly alone I am.
Visiting relatives has never made me feel so in-touch with my culture yet so isolated at the same time. I feel like an outsider. I’m inherently American. Through my relatives, I see an alternate version of myself that I’d forgotten in that decade I was gone: the me that was raised in China. But if I were given the chance to be raised there instead, I don’t think I’d take it. I’m proud to be an Asian-American, despite all the racism and frustration, despite all the cringey diaspora poetry- despite all my loneliness- because it’s made me who I am.
(Really missing the high-speed rails though 😔)
