I had been wanting to get out my oil pastels for a while now, and quickly realized I was out of practice. So I decided to put hours and hours into a digital illustration that I could work on anywhere. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and don’t be afraid to fail.

There are places we leave behind, but never entirely leave. I used to watch the sun rise here on some of the darkest days of my life while working at this beautiful inn. It was lonely, but it was beautiful.
The Asticou Inn has since been renovated and changed, but the memories remain. Ten years later, I painted this as a quiet return to a place that held both my sadness and some of the most beautiful mornings of my life.

I painted this after a long shift, with three kids waiting for me at home. I was exhausted, but I needed to make something beautiful. This is “The Offering,” and I’m sending this watercolor to London for a Winsor & Newton postcard submission. It’s funny how sometimes the things we make when we’re tired end up meaning the most.
Would you send your art somewhere you’ve always dreamed of?
