VLEESHAL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

Mark your calendars for a weekend of celebrations July 4 and 5! Vleeshal celebrates its 50th anniversary announcing two distinct exhibitions that each open new connections across Zeeland and beyond 🌅

From its earliest years, Vleeshal has been known for its bold, experimental program, supporting pivotal moments in the careers of artists who became defining voices of their generation. At its 50-year milestone, Vleeshal also embraces Zeeland’s rich context – from agriculture and sea ecologies to queer modernist histories, heavy industry, nuclear power, and its colonial past alongside Afro-Caribbean and Molukkan communities.

This fall, Vleeshal reflects upon the marks and reverberations of war with a film and sculptural installation by artist Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn. The exhibition is in two parts, the film The Unburied Sounds of a Troubled Horizon, and a sculpture crafted from salvaged unexploded ordinances (UXO) gathered in the area of Quang Tri on the North Central Coast of Vietnam. Together, they provoke the question of whether war ever truly ends, and of how it transfers across geography and generations.

Aanstaande zaterdag 3 oktober opent onze nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘The Unburied Sounds of a Troubled Horizon’, van Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn @tuan.andrew.nguyen

Voor deze tentoonstelling brengt Vleeshal Nguyễn’s sculpturen, gemaakt van artilleriegranaten uit de Vietnamoorlog, in relatie tot een bijzonder Zeeuws verhaal. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden onontplofte granaathulzen in Zeeland omgevormd tot vazen, kandelaars, lampen en andere alledaagse objecten. Wat als oorlogsmateriaal was achtergelaten, kreeg zo een nieuwe vorm en een plaats in het dagelijks leven.

Via een open oproep zijn voor de tentoonstelling versierde hulzen uit negen Zeeuwse huishoudens en families bijeengebracht, aangevuld met objecten uit de collecties van het Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland en het Zeeuws Archief. Deze objecten worden in de Vleeshal naast het werk van Nguyễn gepresenteerd.

DIAM! — WHAT SILENCE CARRIES

On Saturday 3 October, multidisciplinary artist Tjaka Tomas launches ‘Diam! — what silence carries’, exploring the echoes between Zeeland and Maluku through sound, seascapes, docks and Tifa rhythm.

The project takes place as our final ‘Oemoemenoe’ edition for the year, where Vleeshal goes on location with artists around Zeeland. It begins with a live performance in collaboration with Stichting Mae Uku Tifa Group, and continues through the autumn in collaboration with sound researcher and theorist meLê Yamomo.

It will culminate in a final presentation in collaboration with Stichting Mae Uku, as part of the closing programme of Vleeshal’s autumn exhibition by Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn. Stay tuned for more information!

Veel dank aan minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap Rianne Letschert voor haar inspirerende bezoek afgelopen maandag!
Samen verkenden we creatieve visies op de toekomst van Zeeland, samen met wethouder Jesse Aarnoutse, wiens sterke betrokkenheid en samenwerking in Middelburg we enorm waarderen.

With this exhibition, Vleeshal reflects on the reverberations of war across generations and geography with a film and sculptural installation by Nguyễn. The exhibition will be accompanied by local ornamental grenade shells, gathered through an open call and with the Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland @bmzeelandnl

The opening also launches the project ‘Diam! - what silence carries’ by multidisciplinary artist Tjaka Tomas @tjaka.tomas in partnership with Stichting Mae Uku @stmaeuku supported through AIR Zeeland.

Kom werken bij Vleeshal! 👀✨

Vleeshal zoekt publieksbegeleiders voor onze tentoonstellingen in het hart van Middelburg. Als publieksbegeleider ben je het eerste gezicht dat bezoekers zien: je heet hen welkom, vertelt over de tentoonstelling en zorgt ervoor dat iedereen zich vrij voelt om te kijken, vragen te stellen en te blijven hangen.

Een afwisselende rol midden in de hedendaagse kunst, in een van de meest bijzondere tentoonstellingsruimtes van Nederland.

Je houdt je daarnaast bezig met de kassa, toezicht en het openen en sluiten van de tentoonstelling. Ook tijdens openingen en andere publieke momenten ben je een belangrijk gezicht van Vleeshal.

Vleeshal Collectie On Tour - bij @grotekerkveere

Vleeshal bestaat 50 jaar en dat wordt gevierd door heel Zeeland. De Vleeshal-collectie (ondergebracht bij M HKA Antwerpen) wordt t/m 13 september op negen verschillende locaties getoond, verspreid over heel Zeeland. Een gezamenlijk initiatief van ArtBase Terneuzen en Vleeshal Middelburg.

Grote Kerk Veere
Deze zomer presenteert Maartje Korstanje een solotentoonstelling in de Grote Kerk Veere. Tussen haar sculpturen ontvouwt zich een mysterieuze wereld die doet denken aan de bodem van de zee. Een van de werken komt uit de collectie van de Vleeshal en heeft de vorm van een schelp, een blad of misschien een nest. Het lijkt alsof je erin kunt gaan zitten, maar het is een kunstwerk.

In memoriam Barbara Jean Helmes (1943–2026)

Vleeshal neemt afscheid van kunstenaar Barbara Jean Helmes, die met haar werk en aanwezigheid een bijzondere plek innam binnen de Vleeshal-gemeenschap en het artistieke leven van Middelburg.

In 1983 presenteerde zij ‘In search of a probably non-existing oil-well in Montana – A CONTINUOUS PROJECT, ending with a two step tango in Vienna and the end is not yet in sight’, een solotentoonstelling.

Jean Helmes beschreef “de rechten op het onzichtbare of onbestaanbare” als een weerspiegeling van haar artistieke filosofie.

We herinneren Barbara Jean Helmes, wier werk en aanwezigheid deel blijven uitmaken van de geschiedenis van Vleeshal en Middelburg.
