internally screaming bc 1 year after my first cover shoot, I’m starting 2024 with another Local Wolves cover shoot featuring the one and only Sarah Kinsley @sarahkinsleyd 🧚🏼‍♀️✨💗

This one’s a special one bc I first discovered Sarah during the pandemic in 2021 with her Tik Tok videos — specifically the one where she released a video with her song The King and she captioned it, “this is what it sounds like to be alive,” and I really couldn’t agree more on that sentiment. Music has a really big impact on how I go through life (especially with how I process small and big moments), so when I come across songs like The King, it just makes me feel grateful to be alive. Not only is she brilliantly talented, but she is also the kindest girl to work with 🤭

Actually crying happy tears because my first cover shoot is with @localwolves & @p1h_official ❗️I’m so grateful for this opportunity especially because I’ve been wanting to work with LW since high school and to be able to work with them in this kind of large scope is actually mind blowing… like I’ve actually been manifesting this 🤯🤯 These boys were so fun to work with, so genuine and carefree, and let me do whatever I wanted to do creatively. Overall, this cover shoot holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait for more in the future 🤭💝 2023 off to a great start!!!

If you’ve been following my creative journey for a while, you probably know that my personal projects mostly celebrate AAPI culture and identity. I started this during the height of the Asian hate crimes and seeing more Asian representation on our screens now just makes me really grateful to keep telling these stories.

Since today’s the last day of AAPI month, I put together some of my favorite works that celebrate AAPI talent and stories 🫰🏼🙇🏻‍♀️

In 2022, my co-creative director @edenyeung.nyc and I shot a photo story called dysphoria—a reimagining of Euphoria featuring an all-AAPI cast, crew, and fashion.

We pitched it to magazines but were met with rejection after rejection.

The feedback? Too “ahead of its time.”

What we were really saying: Euphoria films in Los Angeles, a city with one of the largest AAPI populations in America. And yet, not a single main Asian character (except for half-Filipino Dominic Fike, whose background was erased in the show). No face that looked like our brothers, sisters, and friends.

That’s the dysphoria of growing up invisible in the most popular show at the time (and honestly, all the time when it comes to TV & film).

Looking back, I think the magazines rejected us not because our story was wrong, but because it was honest. And honesty about their own complicity in the lack of representation? That’s uncomfortable. Rejection is easier.

Now Season 3 is here and the characters are in their twenties. They’ve aged, but so have we. The question still remains: how many more Asian American kids have to grow up without seeing themselves first?

This photo story is our love letter to everyone who felt that absence. We made our own mirror—for our inner child, and for yours.

In 2022, @edenyeung.nyc and I pitched this photo story to magazines and were met with rejection left and right because this project was “too ahead of its time.”

So we held onto it, waiting for the right moment. But honestly? That moment never came.

Now that Season 3 is here, we realized: the photos don’t need a perfect moment. They just need to be seen.

This is a behind-the-scenes look at dysphoria—our all-AAPI reimagining of Euphoria.

ending my BTS content series for “your hanbok, my áo dài” with a look into the styling process!

the Korean hanbok and fan was graciously on loan by @kccny, and the pink áo dài was from my mom’s own collection :””) the green jade necklace was my late grandmother’s and other jewelry is by @sublimajewelry ofc 🫶🏻
