DON’T TRUST THE TRACK

Just because there are tyre tracks ahead doesn’t mean the route is safe for your vehicle!

Ground conditions change. Water levels rise. Sand shifts. And the vehicle that made it through before you might have had very different clearance, tyres or equipment.

Stop when you’re unsure. Get out and inspect the obstacle on foot, where it’s safe to do so. Check the depth, surface and exit route before committing.

A few minutes of checking can save you hours of recovery.

The best off-road drivers aren’t the ones who tackle everything. They’re the ones who know when to proceed, when to find another line, and when to turn around.

Five essential fitments to prepare your 4x4 for the muddy season. 🌧️🛞

1. All-Terrain or Mud-Terrain Tyres: Your tyres are your first line of defence. Choose a tread pattern suited to your driving terrain, with robust sidewalls and sufficient load capacity for your fully loaded vehicle.

2. Suspension Upgrade: Rain can transform familiar tracks into deep ruts and slippery obstacles. A properly matched suspension setup improves ground clearance, control and load-carrying capacity, especially when your vehicle is packed for an expedition.

3. Recovery Gear: Mud often reveals your preparedness. Include rated recovery points, recovery boards, a suitable recovery strap, shackles and an air compressor in your setup. If using a winch, ensure the vehicle and recovery equipment are properly matched.

4. Underbody Protection: Hidden rocks, deep ruts and mud can conceal obstacles. Bash plates and appropriate underbody protection shield vulnerable components from damage when the track becomes rough.

5. Snorkel and Electrical Protection: Heavy rain can quickly change water crossings. A snorkel protects the engine’s air intake during properly assessed water crossings, while electrical connections and accessories should be installed and protected against moisture.

Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of preparation. Familiarise yourself with your vehicle’s clearance, recovery points, tyre pressures and limits before venturing into the mud. No fitment can substitute for sound judgement.

BEACH DRIVING:

There’s nothing quite like dropping your tyre pressures, engaging 4x4 and following the coastline with nothing but sand and sea ahead. But beach driving demands respect. Get it wrong and you can damage your vehicle, the beach and yourself.

Before you hit the sand:

Know the tide. Check tide times before you leave and never assume yesterday’s route will be safe today. Give yourself plenty of room to turn around or retreat.

Lower your tyre pressures. Softer tyres give you a larger footprint and help the vehicle float over soft sand. The correct pressure depends on your vehicle, tyres and load, so know your setup before you go.

Keep your momentum. Soft sand rewards smooth, controlled driving. Avoid sudden acceleration, harsh steering and unnecessary stopping. If the sand starts getting deeper, slow down before you lose momentum.

Use the right mode. Engage 4x4 and low range when the terrain and your vehicle require it. Know your vehicle before you find yourself buried in sand.

Carry recovery gear. A compressor, rated recovery points, recovery boards and suitable recovery equipment can make the difference between a quick recovery and a very long day.

Read the beach. Watch for wet sand, soft sections, rocks, washouts and changes in the terrain. Never blindly follow another vehicle’s tracks.

And most importantly, only drive where vehicle access is legally permitted. Coastal dunes and beaches can be extremely sensitive ecosystems, and driving outside designated routes can cause lasting environmental damage. SANParks, for example, prohibits driving on beaches and closed tracks in areas such as Namaqua National Park. (SANParks⁠)

The goal isn’t to conquer the beach. It’s to travel through it without leaving a scar.

Prepare properly. Drive responsibly. Enjoy the coast.
