Some pictures of the exhibition 'Researching from an archetype: The tailoring jacket' curated by me and Mariam Soliman @mariamsoliman__ last March at
Galerie 45 in Paris.

The discourse and practice of contemporary fashion design is often articulated around the idea of archetypes. Deriving from the Ancient Greek ‘archè’ (origin) and ‘typos’ (model), the term is often adopted today in fashion design studios and communicational materials to refer to some types of garments without, however, deeply grasping the essence of its nature. Archetypes are attached with some specific technical elements that have characterized Western menswear and womenswear wardrobe. However, the term is often used loosely and hardly adopted for its Platonian paradoxical capacity of being a model, an ideal that exists in contrast with its multiplication, its copies. This is the nature of a fashion archetype: it is a matrix that is constantly duplicated, copied, translated but, through these multitudes, becomes intelligible as such.
This exhibition starts from this tension, looking at the tailored jacket as a fashion archetype defined by a recognizable structure built by sleeves, lapel, shoulder construction, a front opening, and volume. Within this clear structure, however, there is great flexibility where the jacket re-states itself as unique through its multiplication: through research, through infinite declinations and manipulations. Starting from a sample garment that shows the internal construction of a tailoring jacket from Gucci Made to Measure collection 2019, we display the actions of rethinking an archetype, its multiple types that reaffirms its uniqueness. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in this archive of images, a selection of documents from the Parsons Paris library: books, historical magazines, exhibition catalogues, pattern manuals, academic texts, auction catalogues, and designer monographs. The exhibition brings these materials into view, showing how knowledge around the jacket is constructed through images, texts, and technical documentation. by @volpeisabella

PRINTING FASHION 2026
EXHIBITION
‘PRINTED DIALOGUES: SIX MAGAZINE’
Free Entrance
25-26 April 2026
12pm-6pm
Union Jeunesse Internationale (1st floor)
2-4 Blvd Marguerite de Rochechouart, 75018 Paris

On the occasion of the Festival Printing Fashion 2026 at Union Jeunesse Internationale (25-26 April 2026), we continue the series of exhibitions ‘Printed Dialogues’ with a focus on the iconic bi-annual publication Six Magazine by Comme des Garçons. Created in 1988 by Rei Kawakubo with editor Atsuko Kozasu and artistic director Tsuguya Inoue, the magazine embodied the idea of fashion as a sixth sense, ‘the sense of surreal’, as attested in the first issue.
The magazine stood at the crossroads between multiple publishing genres and paved the way for a new form of fashion communication. It questioned the nature of fashion communication and its governing rules. Distributed to buyers, journalists and clientele in connection with fashion collections, the magazine did not only present the inspirations behind Kawakubo’s work but also questioned the very idea of what fashion means. As stressed by Inoue, ‘This is our world, we think this is beautiful, join us if you feel the same way’.
The exhibition shows the entire collection of Six magazine for the first time in Paris and reflects on the ways in which the magazine engages our senses. Through analogical and digital installations, it invites visitors to contemplate, take their time, reflect and activate their own perceptions, immersing themselves into this printed world.

A great example of how fashion exhibitions can go beyond showing finished garment, building a visual and material story around an idea. by @volpeisabella
