“There’s no place like home… away from home”

As I have family retiring in Spring City, this quaint and laid back East Tennessee town along US Highway 27 has very quickly become my home away from home ever since I moved to Nashville. The roads for the most part ride smooth, neighborhoods are very well developed, everybody knows everybody, and for railfans it’s got great train action stationed along Norfolk Southern’s vital CNO&TP artery stretching from Cincinnati, Ohio all the way down to Chattanooga, Tennessee. If you ever find yourself watching trains along the CNO&TP or anywhere in East Tennessee, Spring City is definitely one of those “must visit” spots.

“The CNO&TP’s infamous Cheeto invasion”

As to be expected, BNSF was one of our most frequent foreign visitors on our stay in eastern Tennessee. Though all this in one day at least to us was simply incomprehensible as we spent a large chunk of the first few days trying to figure out what was afoot at the Norfolk Southern power desk. Run through BNSF power on 72Z and 73Z was always to be expected but not so much on this I9A (extra 29A) as seen in the first of these six shots.

We didn’t exactly expect to see one of the BNSF Kingston coal trains, let alone both of them in the same day- much less more than once. Ironically enough we saw the same power from 72Z a couple days later tied down on the lead to the TVA Kingston power plant preparing to return to Memphis as 73Z and yet another separate 72Z tied down in the siding at Rockwood waiting for 73Z to untie and spin around the wye at Harriman to return back south to Memphis.

“There’s no way to get your vehicle decked by a train back here”
Some special retard in 2022: “challenge accepted”

Norfolk Southern ES44AC no. 8143 “the Patriot” brings intermodal hotshot 29A down on the heels of ironically, an I9A that had just cruised over the Emory River bridge upon exiting Tunnel 23 at rural and remote Nemo, Tennessee. 8143 is the last of six locomotives of which Norfolk Southern painted for America’s 250th birthday and I can’t lie, they did an awesome job with them.

After a certain incident involving a guy getting his 1960s GMC pickup decked by a train in this exact spot, access to this bridge has long since been limited and the pathway through the abandoned tunnels has been blockaded. Though a foot trail still remains wide open for hikers to make their way back to this location one would consider to be way off the grid. In our three days out along the CNO&TP, this is as remote as it got- not a shred of cell service in sight within at least 10-15 miles. Though the mile and a half hike up from the trailhead was definitely very much worth it as it makes for one of the most unique, scenic and remote railroading scenes you’ll find anywhere in East Tennessee.
