My favourite kind of photography work has slowly become the event/party elevation of a Photo Booth kind.

I was on hand for the 40th birthday of Craig held as a private event in the club Sub Rosa this past Saturday. It was so much fun photographing the attendees from drink one and two proper, into drink four and five loose, into drinks eight and nine inhibition. Did we get beyond to debauchery? You’ll never know.

Here are some snaps of the birthday boy himself. It was a fun time, many reactions were expressed in squeels and gasps and “yaaaaa!”s and you could really feel the love in the air. And that is a big part of why these event shoots have quickly become my favourite kind of photography.

Irene Curtain is always a fun session be it studio or location. They tagged along with Karla Marx to the studio waaaaaay back in April (I am starting my catch-up-run of posting the last few months) and these are always fun sessions I have just for the sake of taking photos to take photos. Karla will usually bring one or two people, we’ll alter the lighting a bit on the fly and then see what happens.
What happened here was a look that was also embellished in the spot by Karla very simply but also very effectively and the final look was a coolly lit pleasant surprise that I didn’t really plan before hand but ran happily with afterwards.

Tomorrow we kick off @vancouverfetishweekend at @thepumpjackpub on Davie!

⛓️Friday night is our Black & White Ball at the @hollywoodtheatrevan

⛓️Saturday day at 2pm is our fetish walk starting at the host hotel and ending at @thejunctionpub

⛓️Saturday night we have our main event at a mystery location where almost anything goes - sign up to our newsletter for more info!

⛓️Sunday is our cruise - boarding at 5pm and leaving at 6pm sharp so don’t be late!

⛓️Aftee the cruise there will be limo shuttles waiting to take you to our last party at the Penthouse Nightclub.

⛓️Monday ia beach day (weather permitting) so please pray to the weather gods! ☀️

Night one, started slow welcoming people into tent at Cowboys, with three headliners making the first of them start at 6:30. It was a fun and loud ease into things, but then things picked up steam at the Honkytonk tent filling up during intermissions in what felt like big house party energy as day turned into night. Dj Kav and Kay L always invite me along for the ride and this might be year four of all the fun that comes along with it.

Took my buddy Tango for a stroll at a place I like to take photos throughout the year. There’s a herd of alpacas and last night there was a huge herd of white tail when we left. Nice warm summer feel of a night and too early for the bugs. by @volumatic

Pockets.

They can be in jeans or coats, they can be in rock formations or architecture, along rivers where the current stops raging and the water is a little warmer hiding fish or corners where the wind or rain just never seems to reach.

One of the greatest feelings in the world is sticking your hand into a pocket and finding money you had no idea was there, just waiting to be found. It was a very similar feeling when I started photographing people. I started finding pockets of people. One pocket lead to another, sometimes it was the little coin pocket within the main pocket and sometimes it was a completely different pair of pants.

Each successive pocket I find has consistently been one more place where I get to warm my hands, store what I value and carry closely where I go so that I am never out of pocket.

Today’s pocket is the amazing Odditease collective, who I have been wanting to shoot for some time. They perform regularly at Congress Coffee which is on the opposite end of the building of Idle Eyes Collective, the perfect little pocket of space I shoot out of. When pockets collide.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to do on the way to this session. I just knew that their planned show was a carnival theme and thought “spotlight” and I had just the as-of-yet unused projector for the job. Add an old backdrop that I have more recently figured out how to use in a way that I like, and the available Studio B next door that just happened to be waiting for me to arrive and I had two settings that were going to work perfectly.
