⛓️🎻Coming to Wavelength on August 27: @volurdoom

With a name derived from “völva,” a seeress in Norse folklore, Völur are not the kind of band to fulfill faux-pagan longings, neither thematically nor musically.

The Toronto-based trio is comprised of bassist Lucas Gadke, drummer Justin Ruppel, and experimental electric violinist Laura C. Bates. Together they weave together folk melodies, heavy riffs, and chthonic chants to breed powerful and chilling slabs of meditative doom. Moving between high-tension, plodding chaos, and beautiful pastoral moods, Völur aims to reflect the world of primordial nature inspired by ancient myths and chilling poems of death and heroism.

Leaving all those who witness their live shows transfixed and spellbound, the power trio has become one of Canada’s premiere forces in heavy music.

Located amidst the reconstruction, A Concert in the Ruins of St. Anne’s Church is a one-night-only collaboration between Wavelength Music and “gallery without walls” Art Spin. This will be a contemplative experience under the stars as we think about renewal and collective remembrance:

🌌One week away: A Concert in the Ruins of St. Anne’s Church 🌌

@Volurdoom + @charlesspearin & the Local Singers with Fleshtone Aura + @AHorseNamedFridayy + DJ BODY////GRAVE

In June 2024 St. Anne’s Anglican Church was destroyed by a tragic fire. A unique and beautiful space, the church held meaning to the generations of families in Toronto’s Little Portugal Neighbourhood, and the fire was a devastating loss for the community.

Located amidst the reconstruction, A Concert in the Ruins of St. Anne’s Church is a one-night-only collaboration between Wavelength Music and “gallery without walls” Art Spin. This will be a contemplative experience under the stars as we think about renewal and collective remembrance.

Canadian doom supergroup Völur (formed by members of Blood Ceremony, Trent Severn, Do Make Say Think) will headline for a night of drone music. They will be joined by Do Make Say Think and Broken Social Scene experimental artist Charles Spearin & Local Singers with Fleshtone Aura — performing a specially curated set for this evening — and emerging chamber folk band A Horse Named Friday from Kitchener.

We are honoured to have access to this historic site, and to animate it with art and music once again.

Marking just abour 5 months since the release of ‘Breathless Spirit,’ the collaborative album from Toronto’s 'violin-weilding prophets of blackened doom/folk/jazzdoom' @volurdoom and ‘stressful electronic music’ makers @_cares . If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the physical copies of the album on the Black Throne webshop to add to your vinyl collection! We are also happy to announce their tea that was originally bundle only will soon be available as an individual item! Just in time as the tundra settles in.

“Does Doom need guitars? Is “heavy” necessarily defined by the riffs? Is the distorted sound of the six-string combined with a slow tempo the definition of Doom? Do the heaviest riffs result in the heaviest possible music? Listen to Breathless Spirit and you will see that the answer to all these questions is NO” – Veil of Sound

Völur is

@lauracbates - violin, electric violin, viola, cymbals, and vocals

@bethegar - electric bass, double bass, harmonium, keyboards, tanbur, clarinet, bass clarinet, and vocals

Justin Ruppel - drums and percussion
