One of the things building Voluserve over the last few months has affirmed for me is that people can genuinely get jobs through volunteering.

And I think we need to talk about this more.

I’ve seen people send me their CVs, and when I ask about their volunteering experience, they have none. Not even volunteering in their place of worship or being involved in community activities.

Nothing. 🥺

And then, when it’s time to transition into another role or move into a completely different field, they struggle to demonstrate transferable skills.

But I’ve also seen people who have volunteered, taken on responsibilities, worked with teams, managed projects and contributed to real work. When we look at their CVs, we can identify skills and experiences from those volunteer roles that are relevant to the jobs they want.

That is one of the things I am very keen on when I talk about volunteering.

Volunteering is not just about giving your time. It is also an opportunity to learn, build skills, gain experience and prepare yourself for other opportunities.

And yes, those experiences can help you get a job.

Of course, volunteering alone will not solve unemployment. But it can help bridge the gap between what people know and what they can actually do.

Sometimes, the experience you need for your next opportunity is waiting for you in a volunteer role.

Don’t just look for opportunities that will pay you. Look for opportunities that will build you, too.

And when the opportunity comes, show up, contribute meaningfully and learn as much as you can.

That experience might just be the bridge to your next job.

This is one of the reasons we are building @Voluserve

Mentorship has taught me this: sometimes the most important thing I can do is take my eyes off myself and serve. 🤍

Even Christ came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45).

For International Day of the Girl Child, I joined a volunteer team at a secondary school to teach the girls about self-awareness, emotional resilience and boundary setting.

I was once at that same stage, full of questions and still figuring out who I was becoming.

Getting to pour back into girls standing where I once stood? Deeply fulfilling.

I’m grateful to God for a community @voluserve @tcwacademy_ that makes serving easy and worth it. I’m looking forward to more opportunities to serve. 🙏🏾

I’ve spoken to a few organizations recently, and one thing I keep hearing is that they need volunteers who can support their work.

Some need social media managers. Others need people to help with content creation, research, data entry, outreach and other tasks. And the good thing is, not all these roles require you to be physically present. Some can be done remotely.

If you run an organization, you can get the support you need while giving someone an opportunity to learn, develop their skills and gain experience.

And if you’re looking to build your skills, grow your portfolio or explore a career path, volunteering could be a great place to start.

That’s what we’re building with Voluserve: a platform that connects people who want to volunteer with organizations that need their skills and support.

So, if your organization needs volunteers, post your opportunities on www.voluserve.com. And if you want to volunteer, there are opportunities waiting for you, too!

Let’s help more people find opportunities to contribute, learn and grow.

What if the opportunity you give someone today becomes the beginning of their life’s work?

I often think about this when I look back at my own journey.

In 2009, I started volunteering around girls’ sexual and reproductive health in Bariga, Alakuko and Amuwo-Odofin in Lagos.

I had no idea then that simply showing up would lead me to design Project RED ROBOTS, and becoming a finalist representing Nigeria at the Dell Innovation Challenge in 2013, and creating books and games like FLOW; a girls guide for menstruation, My Little Period Book for Girls, and GO FLOW.

Looking back, I realise volunteering was more than something I did.

It was a pathway.

A pathway to discovering what I cared about, building skills, finding my voice and understanding my purpose.

Over the past months, my experience as a Fellow of the WomenLift Health Nigeria Leadership Journey, in partnership with WILAN Global, has given me the opportunity to reflect deeply on this journey.

And one thing has become even clearer to me:

We need to create more opportunities for people to serve.

Because volunteering isn’t only about what people can do for an organisation. It can be the opportunity someone needs to discover their strengths, build confidence, develop their skills and find their own expression.

I know this because I was that person.

Someone gave me an opportunity to volunteer, and that opportunity changed the direction of my life.

And perhaps that is why I eventually felt called to create @voluserve, because I know firsthand what can happen when someone simply gets the chance to serve.

Voluserve is about creating that bridge: connecting people who want to contribute with organisations that need their skills, energy and passion.

So this week, I want to encourage organisations:

If you have volunteer opportunities, post them on Voluserve.com

If you know an organisation that could benefit from volunteers, tag them and tell them about Voluserve.

Because you never know. The opportunity you create for someone today might become the beginning of their life’s work.

Sometimes I just sit down and look at these numbers and I’m like, wow. 🥹

104 organisations.
1,456 volunteers.

When I started Voluserve, I knew I wanted to build something that made volunteering easier. I knew there were people who wanted to serve and organisations that needed people.

But seeing both sides actually come together like this? It means a lot.

Because behind these numbers are real people.

Organisations that opened their doors.
Volunteers who decided to give their time.
People who took a chance on something we’re building.

And honestly, I’m grateful.

Voluserve is still a work in progress. We’re still building, fixing, learning and figuring things out.

But look at us.

104 organisations. 1,456 volunteers.

Thank you for being part of the Voluserve family.

We’re just getting started. 🚀

One thing I hear a lot from young people is, “I need experience.”

And honestly, I get it.

You see job descriptions asking for one, two, sometimes even three years of experience, and you’re wondering, How am I supposed to get that experience if nobody will give me a chance?

This is one reason I keep talking about volunteering.

Because volunteering can give you the opportunity to actually do things.

You can work on projects, use your skills, work with a team, take responsibility, solve problems and learn how organisations work.

And those are experiences you can talk about on your CV and in an interview.

You don’t always have to wait for your first paid job to start building experience.

You can start through service.

And that’s what we’re trying to make easier on Voluserve, helping you find opportunities where you can serve, learn and build experience at the same time.

I ended the week feeling a little different.

When we designed @Voluserve, one of the things we wanted from the beginning was a Volunteer Deployment Programme.

We didn’t just want to create a platform where organisations could post opportunities and volunteers could apply.

We wanted to eventually be able to say, “You need volunteers? We can help.”

And this week, we did exactly that for our first client. 20 volunteers for a two- day event.

I honestly can’t explain the feeling of seeing something that started as an idea become something people are actually using.

We already have another booking coming up in a few weeks, and I’m just grateful.

To everyone building something and wondering if they’re getting anywhere, please, give yourself a hug.

Some days make sense. Some days don’t.

Keep moving.

And if you’re yet to join Voluserve as a volunteer or organisation, this weekend is another opportunity to sign up and upload your volunteer opportunities.

Come and build with us.

When we designed Voluserve, one of the features was the Volunteer Deployment Programme.

The idea was simple: organisations should not only be able to find volunteers on Voluserve. When they need volunteers for an event, project or conference, we should be able to provide them too.

And this week, we deployed volunteers for our first client.

An actual organisation needed volunteers, and we were able to provide them.

Just like that, something we had talked about and planned became a real service.

And we already have two booking coming up in the coming month.

If you’re yet to join Voluserve as a volunteer or organisation, this weekend is another opportunity to sign up.

Come on, join us! We’re building and we’d love to have you be part of it.

Information is everywhere. But information only changes things when you do something with it.

You can hear about an opportunity, save the message, tell yourself you’ll come back to it later, and still remain exactly where you are.

I’ve seen this happen so many times. Someone tells you about a job, a training, a volunteer opportunity, a connection… and you say, “Oh, nice.” Then you move on.

But what if you actually followed up?
What if you applied?
What if you showed up?
What if you asked the next question?

Sometimes, the difference between knowing about an opportunity and actually benefiting from it is simply taking the next step.

So yes, information matters.

But what you do with the information you have matters even more.

Two days, one beautiful experience❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥
Volunteering with @voluserve at Africa’s biggest agricultural summit gave me the chance to experience so much beyond the event itself: new faces, new connections, new lessons, and plenty of little moments worth remembering. ❤️
A few frames from the experience. 📸❤️

The first time I heard the word voluntourism was in AIESEC, around 2010/2011.

I remember thinking, “What is this one?” 😂

I had just joined AIESEC and had never heard of volunteering and tourism being combined before.

Over the years, I’ve watched people travel to different countries, experience new cultures and communities, while also giving their time and skills through volunteering.

At some point, I even wanted to go to Zambia for a voluntourism experience. I wanted to see the country and volunteer while I was there.

Looking back, I think what fascinated me about voluntourism was the idea that travel could be more than just seeing a place. You could experience a place by serving in it too.

And honestly, I still find that beautiful.

Would you go on a voluntourism trip?
