It is a decision.    Ribbed cotton carries its own history. Black, grey, cream and navy introduce different weights of neutrality. Each colour shifts the relationship between footwear, trouser and skin.    The choice is not about following a rule. It is about proportion, texture and interruption. A sock can continue the line of a garment or break it deliberately.    No-show socks make no sense with what we currently wearing . ::  Lately, I had the chance to revisit Kenya Hara’s Designing Design. One passage stayed with me.   For his Haptic Exhibition, Hara collaborated with architect Toyo Ito and asked him a deceptively simple question: “What do you think about the physical aspect of human beings?” Ito’s answer was equally simple: “We cannot abstract from living flesh.”      There is something profound in that sentence.   Design can exist in the realm of imagination, abstraction, and visual expression. There are almost no limits to what we can conceive. But the moment design meets the human body, another measure enters the conversation. The body doesn’t care how clever an idea is. It cares how it feels.   For us, this became clear during the development of the ARISE Collection.   The original ARISE construction was more complex. The interwoven pattern was thicker, sharper, and more visually appealing. On paper, it was arguably the more exciting design. But when worn, the story changed. The dense structure created an uncomfortable sensation against the skin. What worked visually wasn’t working physically. So we made a decision that, as creatives, isn’t always easy to make:      We chose experience over appearance.   We introduced TENCEL™ to soften the surface and reworked the construction by flattening the basket-knit structure. And perhaps that is the more meaningful form of design. Not designing for the image of the object, but for the person living with it.   ARISE became a reminder that contemporary design doesn’t have to oppose practicality. The most successful ideas are often those that find a balance between the two—where form, material, construction, and the human body are allowed to influence one another. Because ultimately, a sock isn’t an image. It isn’t a sculpture. It isn’t a pattern hanging on a wall. It is something that lives on the body.
