KLANKBAK 3 — up/down divider path

Two independent CD4046 oscillators drive the up/down inputs of a CD40193 divider.

The /2 and /4 divider outputs are summed and pushed through a harsh filter, panned center.

The /16 output clocks a CD4017. Two of its outputs trigger envelopes for fixed-pitch CD40106 oscillators, panned left/right, with a CD4053 acting as a square-wave VCA.

🎧 Headphones or good speakers recommended.

Raw prototype sound: straight from the circuit — no effects, no editing.
The video is a raw smartphone recording, synced with the audio.

KLANKBAK 3 — 3 OSC Circle Patch 🔊

A second patch demo from the KLANKBAK 3 prototype — and I’m really happy with how this one sounds.

Three oscillators running in a circle: square out into the next oscillator’s XOR input, and ramp out into the previous oscillator’s pitch modulation input. Each oscillator then goes through its own filter and is panned L / mid / R.

Dial in the pitch and pitch modulation until something clicks, then shape it further with the filters. The result is a slowly shifting stereo drone with plenty of movement.

🎧 Headphones or good speakers recommended.

This recording is straight from the prototype — no effects, no editing.

By popular request: first basic KLANKBAK 3 patch demo. 🛠️

KLANKBAK 3 — Double Knot patch
A gentle patch inspired by the Lorre Mill Double Knot.

Both CD4015 shift registers are chained together, with a button to punch a pattern into the sequence through an XOR. That pattern then triggers the three decay envelopes.

A CD4053 switch is used as a square-wave “VCA” for three oscillators, panned left / centre / right, with some filtered square-wave bass underneath.

The audio is straight from the prototype — no effects, no editing. Just the KLANKBAK 3 doing its thing.

KLANKBAK 3 — finally finished. 🔧

This one took a lot of work, soldering, testing, debugging, and probably too many hours staring at schematics… but the prototype is finally complete.

KLANKBAK 3 is a fully DIY experimental electronic instrument built around a collection of CMOS logic, oscillators, envelopes, filters, mixers, counters, shift registers, multiplexers and DACs.

The modules:
• 3G — Hex basic oscillator · CD40106
• 3A — Dual complex oscillator · CD4046 / CD4069
• 3B — Quad AND/XOR, dual DAC & 4× buttons · CD4070 / CD4081 / BC548 / CD40106

It’s been a little quiet here lately — sorry about that. 🙏
I’m still working on the latest project: a Lunetta-inspired standalone modular instrument.

Right now, it’s in the less glamorous stage of DIY: PCB surgery, jumper wires, troubleshooting, and figuring out why things don’t quite do what they’re supposed to. 😅🔧
