my new book, 19/56, will be yours on november 17th.

this wasn’t the book i wanted to write, but it was the one that i felt like i needed to write the most after the death of my mother.

this will be my fifth book, and the first one that i will have published since her passing. this book is a journey through anticipatory grief, watching a loved die to an illness, and losing a parent as a teenager.

when my mother passed away at 56 years old, i thought “what am i supposed to do now? at 19?” but as soon as i recalled all of our conversations around death, grief, and the afterlife, i started to settle into it a little easier. the kindness that comes with watching somebody slowly pass away is that you get to talk about it with them; what is more of a blessing than to still be able to have conversations?

throughout this writing process, i felt waves come over me. sometimes they were calm, sometimes they were heavy. sometimes they were dark, other times they were lighter. but in the end, this is not just my story, it is ours, and it deserves to be shared.

The Human Dignity Resolution I had drafted with community help had passed unanimously at tonight’s meeting on the first reading as city council suspended the three reading rule!

I’m ABSOLUTELY ecstatic that our city has affirmed the city of Lorain as an inclusive, caring, and welcoming city for all to call home.

However, the work is not done. This was just a resolution meaning it was just a statement and while that’s incredibly powerful and important, it does not actually protect our most vulnerable neighbors. It was an important first step, not the last.

I plan to work with many community members, organizations, individuals and residents, and leaders to ensure we can get both the Human Dignity Ordinance “Civil Rights and Human Dignity” and Chapter 1803 “Human Rights Commission” on the agenda and voted for sometime hopefully this year.

Thank you BEYOND words to @eileen554535 for being the sponsor of tonight’s resolution. Your support and dedication to Lorain’s residents is outstanding to say the least! To both @maryspringowski and @victoria_kempton001, thank you so much for your kind words tonight in support! And thank you to the rest of council for voting for the resolution.

I want to thank @vpjohnnyc (pictured) for taking the long drive to the meeting to speak in favor of the resolution, you did GREAT! And additionally want to thank @peplorer96 and @va.lerie9578 for showing up as well!

Let’s keep moving forward, work’s far from over! I’ll keep you all updated as this vote passing this fast was unexpected so I have a few things to move back around going ahead. 🥹🌈🥰
