My first ever RARE experience. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. There are no words to describe the emotions of meeting authors you have always dreamed of meeting and to be part of such a wonderful event.
I also met amazing readers, bloggers and new authors. My experience as a volunteer was awesome and my anxiety over messing up was real. Thank you team @romance_author_reader_events for the support and out of this world organisation. Thank you Jenny for taking me under your wing 🩷

I know I may be late in joining, but I want to share my opinion and state where I stand on this.

While I was away battling with real life I found out that some readers “reported” books with the accuse of their “offending tropes”, as a result these books were removed from some sellers.

Colour me surprised when I wanted nothing more than escaping into a book only to discover the choice was taken from me. Not because said authors offended anyone but just because some petty egomaniac decided what should be read and what shouldn’t! Well! Bigotry never meant freedom!

We are so easily outraged to learn some of those books we now list as “classics” were censored! We don’t see the reason why that happened. Yet, we fail to see how dangerous it is that nowadays someone can come out and say “you can read any book you want but only those I let you”; this sounds pretty much like an echo of “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. (Cit Animal Farm) Not what happened you may say? Well, if you take away my freedom to read something you don’t approve of even if said “trope” doesn’t affect you! You are validating the aforementioned. You’re free not to read it! And yet you force on me whatever you deem worthy… you’re pretty much acting like a sanctimonious jerk. You still don’t see where I’m going with this? Well, then, let’s say tomorrow somebody decides to ban your favourite trope… how would you feel? And please spare me the hypocrisy of stating X trope is safe and Y isn’t! We are not talking about real life! This is fiction! Turn the other way and let me read what I want! Your freedom ends where mine begins.

I didn’t name a specific trope on purpose because this could be about “taboo romance” or “sports romance”. If we go down the road where an individual decides what is fine and what is not for everyone then nobody is safe…

I can’t being to express how good this story is, after multiple rereading it still feels like the first time and each time it hits just so beautifully hard. Enzo and Tom have lived rent free in my head ever since the first time I met them.

I never doubted Leigh would deliver an amazing story, what I didn’t anticipate is the level of obsession I would develop, she didn’t just exceeded my expectations, she far surpassed them.

Enzo and his preppy persona have been fascinating from the very beginning, when I discovered he would be the love interest of the stern, no nonsense attitude FBI agent Rothwell my heart leapt up from joy.

Ms Shen does an amazing job in portraying their difficult journey, she has grown as an author and her maturity shines through, making possible the impossible, a Camorra enforcer and an FBI agent cannot be together, this has disaster written all over it, and yet she pulls it off spectacularly.

She carefully draws all the layers making Enzo and Tom with a sensitivity and attention that is truly amazing, she broaches hard subjects with care and consideration without being condescending nor patronising.

This charge of emotional rollercoaster was a formidable journey I’ll be repeating more often than it’s sane to admit, but I don’t care, I loved the irony, the clumsy moments, the fragility and the nicknames, don’t get me started on those or I’ll be bawling my eyes out again.
