Recently our @vtasc.heavycivil toured the Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport to see airport construction up close as they prepare for the Region 2 Competition. Huge thanks to Parrish and Partners for giving the team a firsthand look at the airport's recent apron expansion and the engineering behind it. Nifemi Idowu, a junior in building construction reflected on the visit: "We learned so much about airport construction and will incorporate that into our competition strategy. The road to the competition so far has been full of experiences like this that enable us to put our best foot forward. We are so grateful for the support." Meet Riley Maynard, a sophomore building construction student and project engineer intern with @skanskausa. This summer, Riley worked on the UVA Manning Institute of Biotechnology project and is continuing her internship experience on @virginia.tech's Mitchell Hall project this semester. "The best part of my internship has been the people I've worked with. They've helped me learn new things and become more confident in the construction field." @vt_ascteams members recently toured the @wmjordan_co project to see construction in action and learn from Hokies working in the industry. Students explored site logistics, project coordination, and sequencing while hearing career advice from recent CEM graduates Marissa Avalos and Makayla Lusk and BC alumnus Brandon Renick. CEM senior, Nick Jones commented, "It was great hearing from two recent CEM grads about their transition from Virginia Tech into the industry. They gave us some great advice on making the most of senior year and what to expect when starting out as a new grad." Thank you to W.M. What does a career in construction look like? Our first-year experience (FYE) students got a closer look last Friday during a trip to Richmond to visit @hitt_contracting and @clarkbuilds. The FYE program helps students explore their field of study from day one. This trip gave them a chance to see the industry beyond the classroom, ask questions, and learn from professionals in the field. This morning, we spent time with the @vttherapydogs at the @skanskagroup Mitchell Hall project site in support of @constructionsuicideprevention week. The theme this year is Building on Progress. Construction has made important strides in addressing mental health, and that's worth celebrating. But every life lost to a jobsite incident or suicide is one too many. That's why continued conversations, education, and support matter. The Young Alumni Network's First Friday Cookout gave students a chance to step away from class, meet industry professionals, and start building connections that can make a difference after graduation.
