Who knew the Vanderbilt Curb Scholars Program could generate not only lifelong friendships, professional networking, and innovative projects, but also love?

When A&S student Riley Beal (BA’20) and ENG student Sydney Juda (BS’21) met through the Curb Scholars program at Vanderbilt, their friendship was immediate, but it took them a year to begin dating. Their relationship evolved across campus over the years, from attending Lights on the Lawn to Riley cooking for Sydney in his Mayfield kitchen. They even survived the Covid pandemic long distance between California and Florida, which they say brought them closer together in the end.

This past summer, the two tied the knot in a wedding officiated by Elizabeth Meadows, a faculty member in the Department of English who ran the Curb Scholars Program when they were participants.

“We felt there was no one else that felt right for that honor. Elizabeth is the force that brought us together, and we felt she should be the one to both legally and metaphorically usher us into a new chapter of our life. We’re so happy she was the one beside us during our vows,” said Sydney.

Can caves be time machines? They can to Jessica Oster, professor of earth and environmental sciences, whose lab’s research on caves has helped to uncover thousands of years of environmental history, giving us a better understanding of modern climate shifts. The lab has received a prestigious joint grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation to expand their work studying chemical clues trapped inside cave minerals.

Additionally, Bethan Lodge, a doctoral student in the lab, received the prestigious $20,000 Charles W. Maus Graduate Research Fellowship in Karst Studies from the Cave Conservancy Foundation, which is given to just one graduate student nationwide yearly. Lodge is working to reconstruct regional climate conditions from the past 4,000 years by analyzing the geochemistry of cave minerals and pairing cave records with local fossil remains.
