True to tradition, after seeming like spring for a couple weeks, April has brought back the snow! This morning it seemed to be full on winter again, though now just 10 hours or so later it has all melted. Fun while it lasted, though!

Foggy walk down our road right before the snow melted.

From my first roll of Leica’s new Monopan 50, which I’m really enjoying!

Last weekend it was still snowy and beautiful! It’s all melting now, but I didn’t develop this film until yesterday, not knowing the photos would be outdated already. šŸ˜‚

I haven’t developed my own film at home for over a decade, and it’s nice to be back to it! Although you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, you can get him to revisit old ones.

Shooting film is a completely different mentality to digital, and although I haven’t been without a film camera, pretty much ever, I haven’t shot much in the past 8 years or so.

This weekend @lydiawinters and I hung out in the WAY too cold Stockholm for a bit with our new cameras, and went to the Elliott Erwitt exhibit at @fotografiska. He’s our favorite photographer, and the exhibit was amazing.

We also, as seen in the first photo here, walked on the ice in Stockholm for the first (and likely last) time. There were hundreds of people out there with us, even though it was -12°C.

Developing film at home is rewarding AND it allows you to shoot film and still get the photos the same day, for the impatient such as myself. šŸ˜‚

I made a spoon! šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

I finally visited @kalthoffaxes in Stockholm and purchased one of her absolutely wonderful Small Carver 01 axes. It’s exactly as the name implies, a small carving axe. And I’m in love with it.

I’ve never carved anything but tent pegs and pencil tips before, and I have to say it was the most relaxing afternoon. First I cut a small log down on the bandsaw into a block, then used the axe to make the basic shape of a spoon, and then used two little @morakniv carving knives that I got just after picking up the axe. And then did some sanding, because although there’s apparently a lot of debate about whether or not to sand your spoons, I don’t exactly have decent technique yet and this spoon needed sanding. šŸ˜‚

This was the most relaxing Saturday afternoon I’ve had in a long time. by @vubui

I had all the axes out for the obligatory annual full cleaning, sharpening and oiling, so I thought I’d take a photo since they aren’t otherwise in the same place at the same time.

This is what 13 years of unintentional axe collecting looks like.

1. Gränsfors Bruk (@gransforsbruk ) Large Splitting Axe - The best axe I’ve ever used for splitting wood. It’s the main axe that I use to split the firewood we burn in the winter in our house.
2. Northmen (@northmenguild ) Northlander Forest Axe ā€œStalwartā€ - This is the most beautiful axe I’ve ever seen. I haven’t used it yet, though, it hangs sadly near the fireplace, it’s bigger than I expected and I haven’t had the need for it yet.
3. Gränsfors Bruk Splitting Maul - This heavy thing comes out to split really tough knotty logs for home firewood.
4. Kiwari Ono Splitting Axe - I’m still testing this out. I wanted to know how well a Japanese style splitting axe worked. So far pretty good.
5. Gränsfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet - A great little hatchet that mainly sits is in my chainsaw kit.
6. Fiskars (@fiskars ) Norden N7 Hatchet - I wanted a maintenance-free axe to just leave full-time year-round in the car for emergencies, but not one that’s all plastic. It’s come in handy a few times on the road already!
7. Gränsfors Bruk Small Forest Axe - This is one of the most famous axes in the world, and for good reason. I really love it for the size and capability especially in the Swedish forest. I use this for trail clearing and limping felled trees.
8. Gränsfors Bruk Outdoor Axe - This is the perfect backpacking axe. Tiny, light, capable, makes great camp firewood.
9. Husqvarna Splitting Axe - a mistake, I’m going to sell this axe because I don’t like it at all.
10. Tuguo Abe Axe - There’s an 84 year old craftsman in a small forge in Nagaoka, Yoika, Japan, making these axe heads by hand. They have a rustic feel to them, and when I saw it I had to have it, so I could try a Japanese style outdoor axe. It’s a bit heavy and I’m still trying to figure it out.
11. Warikomi Bakin Japanese Hatchet - This carpenter’s axe is just for the workshop, for when I need to remove a lot of wood from something quickly.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wagtail in the snow before. They’re here from April to November and then, like birds way smarter than me, they fly south for the coldest darkest parts of winter.

Last night we had a solid snowfall, and since it’ll probably melt by tomorrow, I had to go for an early morning walk with the camera and found this little cutie.

One more photo of the chair I made, now in its natural habitat. The finish has dried and it’s in use (only by @lydiawinters who wanted to clarify ā€œthis chair is mine no matter what, right? Like even if we some day break up?ā€ šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚).

Here’s how it fits in to the style of our house, perhaps you can see why I chose this design as the first thing I wanted to make. Besides the rest of the set of four of these chairs, what should I make next?

Yesterday I finished building my first ever piece of furniture (my first proper woodworking project, really), this dining chair. It’s a design by the incredibly talented chair designer, @calebjamesmaker, a stackable dining chair in the Danish Modern style.

I made it out of European oak (see the last photo to see what the chair started as), which was really hard to work with as the wavy and twisted grain made hand planing the boards flat a ton of work. But it’s worth it for the gorgeous patterns and the fact that it’s such a durable material that this chair will most likely outlive me.

@lydiawinters has claimed this chair and ordered 3 more, so if you’re wondering where I am the next few weekends, just follow the sounds of saws.

Nerdy info: I bought the wood from @eko_ek_stockholm, made templates with the @shapertools Origin, flattened the boards with @leevalleytools hand planes, milled the wood with my @recordpower band saw, did most of the cutting and sanding with a combination of @festool tools and a number of Japanese hand tools, and finished it with @vinniesoil. taken in Tungelsta, Stockholms LƤn, Sweden by @vubui
