Is God Calling Your Limbs To Pray, from my series titled Esperar (2026)

This series photographs my mother in my grandmother’s home and explores the cultural practice of prayer. I am not a religious person, but I do find myself praying because it was something I was taught to do, not because I believe in anything specific. I think of it more as something inherited. I can’t say that I know for sure my prayers are reaching a god, but I find comfort in releasing my desire into the air, or whispering my troubles and letting go of them.

One of my earliest memories is being in my great grandmother’s bed at night and watching her pray. She would get on her knees, rest her elbows on the edge of her bed, bow her head and pray. It would scare me. No matter how many times I shook her, or yelled her name she would keep going and not let me interrupt her. When she died in 2009 we took some of the items she had left behind in her home. Two of them being the rocking chair my mother is sitting in, and the cross above the front door which you can see reflected in the mirror above my mom. Not included in this series is a bible that we also inherited from her. In the front of the bible my great grandmother used as a notebook that documents the names and birthdays of her children and other family members. There is also a lock of my aunts hair which we use as a bookmark. So when I say prayer is something I inherited, this is what I mean. by @vurpu

This was one of the first iterations of Ungendered Flesh before I had even given it a name. If you have been following this series, you would gather that the pieces address dehumanization and commodification of the Black body.

With this piece specifically, I wanted to make a point that Black Lives Matter does not stop at police brutality in America. Black people across the world experience dehumanization and oppression in various ways that we may not know about. So when we say Black Lives Matter, it is all encompassing, it transcends a single narrative.

I encourage you to do your own research. The algorithm limits what I can say here.

The Suri (Surma) people of southwestern Ethiopia use scarification as a rite of passage. Women receive raised scars marking beauty, maturity, and womanhood. Men wear theirs as a record of bravery and standing in the community.
