Bare Bones (Please Love Me) / Autoportrait šŸ“† 2023-2024 šŸ’€ Oil & Color Crayons on Wood, 30*72’’

After my house burned, I went into a time of shadows. I had finished the project that had pulled me onwards for over a year and nothing was left, not even the comfort of my own bed to rest and recover. I was falling in love very deeply for the first time in a long time - and that alone, made my shadow soar. In the darkness, a story emerged from the depth of my memory; Skeleton Woman, as told by Clarissa Pinkola Estes in Women Who Run With The Wolves. In her retelling of this powerful Inuit tale, she speaks of the power of love to heal ancient wounds - and how these wounds come to the surface to be held. It helped make sense of the deep chaos I was feeling and why suddenly ancient traumas reared their heads. As I was holding to that story, I found a book of life-size photographies of bones, the entire skeleton all together than all apart. And so, I started painting her - skeleton woman - my wounded deep self demanding to be loved, to be brought to light. It was the slowest painting I have done - most of it was time spent sitting with her, crying with her, looking more itensely than I knew I could. It took many months, but it transformed me and my way of painting completely. It taught me so mucha bout myself - and about my practice. How ironic that from facing the parts of me I struggle to love, my favorite painting ever could emerge. But such is the nature of shadow work: in holding space for discomfort, magic is born.

Halfway through 'Fleurir les Ruines' - You can still participate by coming by on a wednesday, friday or sunday between 2 and 6:30pm @ Promenade des Saveurs ( 2215 rue Dufresne). The last sunday (20th) will be at Parc des Faubourgs for the Neighborhood party!
šŸ’
I have been learning a lot from the wisest teachers on the street - kids stop and ask questions and do not hesitate to jump in. Whereas adults often need to be pushed gently, waving away their protestations that they do not know how to paint. A two year old knows less, but has yet to grow afraid.

Afraid of failing, of looking silly, of making a mess. At what point do we stop trying things we have not yet mastered? When do we start drawing lines between what we think we can and cannot do?

Everyone can paint. If you can hold a brush, you can paint. Of course, time and patience are required to build skills. It takes years to close the gap between abilities and visions - and then the goal posts move further at each step, driving us forth on an endless quest.

But it is curiosity, not perfectionism, that allows us to walk the path. To do it badly until, one day, it gets good. Children have that freedom: to explore, to play, to try. And when adults finally dare, I see how quickly it untangles the knots. The shift in mood that fifteen minutes of playing with colors can bring. It is powerful, because it is simple.

This project has showed me that academic complex installations aren't always necessary. It is more than enough - and frankly quite necessary - to create meeting spaces. Places where neighbours can stop and chat and meet each other and do something creative and spontaneous. To bring a bit of the unexpected on people’s daily path. Give them a reason to stop and stretch their definition of what they can do.

That community work is at the heart of my practice. It makes all of the sacrifices of being an artist worth it. It holds so much meaning and I am so grateful that I get to do this for a whole month, weaving relationships and building community. Thank you @centrevillemontreal @quartiercultureldesfaubourgs for supporting this project! And @carlos_argentique for the photos! And everyone who painted! taken in Rue Dufresne by @vvv.alentin.aaa

Oye oye! I’m initiating a big community mural project and I need people who want to come paint with me and dream about the future of community spaces! I care so much I took the time to make posters by hand because I can’t stand all the AI slop posters and I did spend 30+ years teaching myself to draw so I have grown my own generative organic intelligence model.
🤯
Come practice yours with me in one of the cutest places in Montreal aka La Promenade des Saveurs, full of flowers and veggies and good vibes.
🌸🪲🌻
Share widely - this is free, there are 11 dates and anyone is welcome, no matter how much skills you think you have or how young or old you feel! I’ll be there with colors at the ready on wednesdays, fridays and sundays, from 2pm to 6h30pm, as of August 26th (with the exception of September 6th when I’ll be at @canettes.deruelle !)
šŸ¦‹šŸ€šŸž
On the 20th of September, the last workshop will be held at Parc des Faubourgs, during the Fête de Quartier! The mural will be displayed and then dismantled, so that everyone can leave with a little piece, like the plant of our collective memory going to seeds.
šŸŒæšŸƒšŸŒ±
Special thanks to l’Arrondissement Ville-Marie, @quartiercultureldesfaubourgs and @maisondelaculture_janinesutto for their support. And of course to the amazing @carrefoursolidaire for letting me root in their magical space and being such incredible pillars of community. You give me hope in the future!

Edition Fleuve is NEXT WEEK and I'm so excited! Zinesters will gather in a beautiful well lit church in the adorable village of St-Simon-de-Rimouski. Not only are the artists there extremely worth it, but it is located in the most beautiful part of Quebec, Bas-Saint-Laurent.

Pack you swimming suit and a camera to try to capture the incredible sunsets, prepare to smell some wild roses and eat good sea food and make your way there next week for a perfect trip with art as the cherry on top. Oh and if you do go there, I'm still looking for a lift and I have glowing 5 star reviews as a roadtrip buddy.

Enjoy some film pictures shot by @carlos_argentique last year along with my friend @catou_beau ! Hope it entices you sufficiently to make the trek.

And for my francophones out there - je vais présenter un nouveau zine en français pour l'occasion que j'ai treĢ€s haĢ‚te de vous partager! Une raison supplémentaire pour remonter le fleuve.

Au plaisir de vous y voir - and please take me with you and I'll show you some great swimming spots and where to get the best strawberry floaters you've ever had. taken in St-Simon De Rimouski by @vvv.alentin.aaa

Some photos of a few of my zines that will be available this saturday in my new neighbourhood of Verdun. I only have two left of Arcane Seed's second edition already !! 😨 Really thought 88 copies would last me the year...

Come say hi and grab the last one on your way to the beach! Happening July 11th from 12-5pm at Epiphany Church in Verdun. Special thanks to @carlos_argentique for the photos, which will eventually be used for my online store - but website building is not on my summer bucklist, so until then if you want a zine, you have to come meet me in person! Or slide into my DMs if you can't make it to Verdun.

This cute poster was made by @regina_draws and the market features dozens of wonderful artists and artisans, organized by the best @monamie_frankie See you there! taken in Church of the Epiphany, Verdun and Ville Emard by @vvv.alentin.aaa

The brain child of @oceaneclair & yours truly! I am so proud of this work I had to get over talking to a camera (pro tip: remove glasses so you actually can’t see anything). Special thanks to @carlos_argentique who worked his magic and made me feel at ease being myself - so much so that my inner creature came out. Hope you enjoy my silly self now exposed on the internet! Oh the things we do for love & asparagus! See you tomorrow!

Onwards with my zine binding quest for Asparagus Festival @fermeagricola this Sunday the 7th!

Yesterday I took the whole afternoon off because my left arm was hurting - it’s an old injury I sustained while working for a ceramicist and nursing a broken heart (too much guitar playing + heavy clay lifting = learning a lesson about your body’s boundaries).

As I get old we I really strive to be a good friend to my body. To listen to its needs and limitations. But of course when met with deadlines that can be extremely stressful! The mental part of taking a break is definitely the hardest for me. So I went to the River and it held my anxiety. Then my friend @dodoaimelescroquettes came to eat some asparagus risotto, watch a movie and bind a few zines in very laid back fashion. I may not bind all 100 zines but tending to my bones is more important! None the less, 75 zines are bound as of right now so I’m satisfied. Tomorrow I will present the final zines, engineered with @oceaneclair - and available Sunday! I also want to do a little break down of exactly how long it takes per zine. Math time is coming!

Wishing us all pockets of rest and care for our bodies and minds. by @vvv.alentin.aaa

Behind The Zines no. 2!

This Sunday I will be selling my new zines, born out of collaboration with @oceaneclair aka the mastermind behind Asparagus Festival which is now about to have its fourth edition on Sunday the 7th of June @fermeagricola .

This zine is made out of recipes gathered among farm employee and friends to inspire you into cooking asparagus in even more fun ways! We had a delightful time making this but now I am on to the physical binding process and I wanted to show all the work that goes into making these.

As an artist I never really count my hours as it is such an abstract work - how do you account for the time spent gathering ideas? But I at least wanted to try for once to get an idea of how much time and energy was put into this. So for this part, it took a little over an hour. This is the fastest part of the process of binding, tomorrow the big work begins! Fortunately it’s also the most fun - at least in my opinion. See you tomorrow for the actual binding! by @vvv.alentin.aaa
