POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
While going through an old sketchbook, I came across this heartwarming scene that I was lucky to observe from my window in The Hague. I remember being so touched by her enthusiasm and care to make him know that she is amazed by his skills. She was moving from one window to another to show her thumbs up with a big, honest smile.

Observing life is precious and so fulfilling. I have now deleted instagram on my phone, so it might take longer to receive a reply from me, but at least you will know that I will be back to looking at life. The other day on my way home, I saw from the tram a cat looking for mice in the canal, and a little mouse nonchalantly walking away a couple meters behind it. The nerve! I said to myself. I believe I was the only witness and I love it.

I will try to bring back the habit of looking, instead of scrolling, because what a shame it is to miss out on so many stories that happen right in front of us? by @vyaraboya

I spent my summer drawing dancing, happy people who love each other.

Special thanks to @milena_koseva_ for her company, her help and her seemingly never ending energy.

I loved being able to combine my two biggest pleasures in my work — drawing from observation and drawing dancing people.

Thank you all for the freedom that I’ve been given, the kind words and the trust you put in me. by @vyaraboya

Being part of this beautiful magazine was already enough to make me leap for joy, but discovering that David mentioned my work in the preface was the sweetest, crunchiest cherry on top of this surprise cake 🍰.

And what about this flamboyant yellow that so playfully frames my pastel toned illustrations? Beauuutiful.

Thank you 💛

Sometimes you get an email notification on your phone and you see that it’s from one of The Guardian’s art directors. You are astounded and you read the mail hastily in excitement and slight disbelief that this is actually happening to you.
But it is and the story they are inviting you to illustrate is exactly the type that speaks to your heart.

The Guardian has a magazine called The Long Read and it publishes a selection of their longer articles with illustrations and outstanding design. It’s a piece of beauty, get yourself a copy if you live in the UK or through their online bookshop!

The story I had the joy of illustrating is about the UK libraries that are much more than just a place to borrow books. They are a safe place to many who feel vulnerable and lonely, tired or overwhelmed by life. It’s a place where no one expects anything from you, where you can find rest and a tap on your shoulder. And all this thanks to the special people who work there.

This is exactly the feeling I remember from 2018 in the public library in Cambridge. When I read the full article, I was drawn back to these sketches of mine where I was seeking as much refuge as the lady that I sketched. During my Master’s we were encouraged to draw under any circumstance — cold rain and wind was what we ate for breakfast for two months. I understand how much more privileged I was than this woman staring out the window, but we both had felt the need to find shelter in the library. The two sketches are drawn in different moments. The second time I saw her at the same spot, I got enthusiastic and payed more attention to her (you will see the notes on the last slide).
I think she was actually the inspiration behind my first narrative project right after the observational drawing module. I loved how she stared in the void and rested her mind. This turned into my project “Mindful the Gap”, an experimental small book about moments of contemplation, gap moments.

All this to say that I felt truly thankful to be given exactly this text. It resonated immediately with me and my experience. My gratitude goes to Suzanne and David.

I will soon share the actual magazine.

Despite the superficial appearance on social media, life has been difficult, I imagine not only for me.
And these short moments of simplicity, non-pretentiousness and slowness are so rare and I am so thankful for them, that I want to keep them here and come back to them when I feel low and discouraged.
I have always found it hard to create when my soul is tired and numb of sadness. There are, surely, artists who turn this into something beautiful. But I am most creative when I’m happy and calm.
The sketches that you see here are nothing special, and that’s okay, because it was the state in which I drew them that is more special to me.
And oh how I love observing people. It’s my forever go-to source of joy.

Greece is a healing place.

Rest is not a luxury, dear people. Take care ❤️. by @vyaraboya

Live drawing at the Illustration Station Festival, in Sofia ✨
This was the first (of many to come, we hope!) festival for narrative illustration.

Organised by @albena_limoni
Featuring (not in order of appearance) @gosiaherba , @mikolajpa , @kali.myx , @petyakokudeva , Maria Doneva, Kremena Dimitrova, Liliya Rusanova, Mihaela Timofeeva.

I was invited to document the event through sketches which only shows how well Albena knows what I enjoy doing ❤️.
In the afternoon I also had the pleasure to do a portfolio review for a couple of young artists.

For those who have read until here and still don’t understand what I am talking about — we are gathering to engrave on Tetrapak, which is the material of your juice or milk cardboard. During the workshop, we explore several techniques that could be applied over this very humble material, we discover artists who skillfully use it, we listen to good music and we enjoy a glass of wine or the amazing Scoby kombucha @scoby.drinks ✨

For more info, please see my previous “Drink and Print” post.
