Taken down from both TikTok and Instagram, this was one of my first posts when I started my account in January. I didn’t realise they were removed until now, and I’m not sure why this was done at all.

I was raised in a strict mormon household in Australia, and served a mission in the Philippines from 2019-2020. There’s a lot the church is able to hide or sugarcoat from those of us outside America or mormon-dense communities.

As independent journalism becomes increasingly accessible, I’ve been desperate to speak up about teachings and practices within the LDS church that have been censored, or spoken about frivolously so as to “respect members beliefs and feelings”.
Truth is only contumelious for those who have built their dignity upon falsehood.

Personally, I believe dignity must be built socially, and defended individually.
You can learn more about any government (also called religion) from its treatment of human rights than from its doctrine, promises or scripture.

In 1978 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the ‘Revelation on Priesthood’, officially lifting internal segregation laws against black and brown members, which prohibited specific people from receiving priesthood ordination, and full temple participation.

It’s usually framed as a big turning point, however, the ideas and attitudes that built up during the ban still echo in church spaces today, especially for Black members and ex-members who speak up about subtle (and plenty of not so suble) racism, both historically, and ongoing.

Yet today, depending on who you ask, the history is still actively reinterpreted. Critics point to a clear record of racism in past teachings and policies, while most LDS apologetic narratives soften it, emphasize uncertainty, and distance the modern church from what came before.

Big policy shift in 1978. Much messier human impact that’s still doing harm.
